Camco 551 mod

Post by glennbad »

I did this mod for John of JK Knives as a Christmas gift. The Camco 551 was used but not abused. I cleaned it out inside, but left it otherwise in the used condition. The amber stag on the mark side was quite craggy, I loved it. The pile side stag was much different, but believe it or not, it was a matched set. I had a lot of trouble giving this one up.

Very nice treatment on that one Glenn! ::tu::

Are those plain bolsters steel or nickel silver?
I have one in the pile like it.

Dale, those are steel bolsters. Those Camco's are nice and solid, they make good mod knives.

Thanks everyone!

The one I have is steel also. I like them because I can etch my logo on the bolsters.

I agree that the Camco knives are good solid knives, the blades may be a bit thinner than those branded Camillus, but the thinner blade makes for some good blade dynamics; nice thin cutting edge. They get very sharp and have good edge retention. IMO Camco was one of the best "value brands' of the last 30 to 40 years.

I really like the way yours came out, though the amber stag is a pain to work with!
It usually takes me two or three days to get the stain off my hands after working with amber stag.
