Buck 1960"s and 1980"s 110 comparison

Hoyt Buck produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt and his son Al moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the infamous Model 110 Folding Hunter. The company's innovative history and attention to quality have made for many great collectible knives.

Buck 1960"s and 1980"s 110 comparison

Post by terryl308 »

:D got a nice surprise yesterday from a friend of mine, he gave me a couple of his dad's Buck knives. The one is a 1960's vintage 110 with sheath. It was well used but still a nice gift. the other one I've had since the 1980's if my memory is still correct, it also was a gift from a ag chem rep salesman in Ne. It's been used a lot also. I took photo's of both to compare the two. The older one is a little thinner (.525") and has the two small rivets holding the cocobolo scales in place. The blade nail nick is shallow and is stamped BUCK only on the left side of the ricasso. The well worn sheath is of the thin black leather type with the silver colored snap with BUCK stamped on it. (no model number) The 80's model is .610" thick and the blade is lightly stamped BUCK, under that is .110. and under that USA. The sheath is heavy black leather with Buck stamped on the cover piece and has the silver colored snap with Buck on it. the back bottom of the sheath has 110 stamped on it also. If I'm wrong on the dates , feel free to correct me. thanks for looking. Any comments are welcome.

Side by side it's pretty obvious the originals are slightly smaller knives. You can send the knife back to Buck; for a nominal fee they will make it look nearly like new and sharpen it back to a factory edge as well. I've never owned a 1960's, but folks who do love the belt carry of the early sheaths. OH

 Thanks guys for the response, I may have made a mistake calling the 60's cocobolo, after doing some more searching, I think it might be ebony wood instead. I may look into sending it back to Buck for some regrinding, definitely don't want the blade replaced though. Unfortunately a lot of the pocket knives that I find here in farming/ranching country have had some ruff grinding done to them. They were just "tools" and the owners didn't have the proper tools to sharpen them correctly. Terry

Hi, great 110's their both India Macassar ebony wood, the old one has a cast brass frame with a integeral butt spacer most have pours from gas in the brass, the 2 dot is sintered brass the same process they use now, if you use Joe Housers data the 2 dot is a 1979 or 1978,it has 3 large inlay rivets, the old one has a struck nail nick it's a version3 variation 1 1967, BUCK with a dot tang stamp, all the version 3 110 are hand made and worth much more than the 2 dot, both are 440C steel, it looks like you had a great day, you may want to send your variation1 to Buck for a spa treatment it's well worth it.

Terry, Thanks for the info. I've owned several 110's and knew nothing about them. I sold all to a Buck collector. Probably even some good ones.
