Re: camillus #72
Wow! Thanks for that. So does that mean that my short line bone 72 with the first generation blade lay out is a pre 1948?

Re: camillus #72
Cuz, your Camillus short line bone 72 with the first generation blade lay out is 1946.
BECAUSE in the spring of 1947 Camillus discontinued the pen blade, replaced it with the small clip blade and moved it to the lower end of the knife, pairing the main blade with the coping blade.
This is an exert from the 1946 catalog (which I think was trotted out again for 1947).

.......I've got 3 like this, but the bone on mine is not near as pretty as yours..i also like this configuration better than the master paired with the coping blade......but my favorite whittlers are the 4 line split backspring whittlers..............Colonel26 wrote:Thanks! I have shown this knife before, probably in this thread. I bought it from a old man that had a hardware
store, he said this knife was purchased for that store. Hope it is alright to post again. Bad pic. it is much
nicer in hand.

Really nice knives guys!
Carmillus, I am a split back whittler fan, I love em! But I don't think I've seen any of the Camillus ones. Shucks I didn't know anything about Camillus until I joined here. I sure would like to see them split backs of yours!

Re: camillus #72
Grant -- The four line is more than likely pre-WWII. I'm not aware of any knives made for the civilian market during the war years and the split back didn't appear in the post war catalogs.

It's easy Tommy. All you do is hook an extension cord to that old Canon, load it up with Ektachrome and plug it into the same outlet your PC is plugged in to. The rest is automatic.carrmillus wrote: .....I don't have a clue as to how to post pictures!!.........

Here's one that was "buried" in my shop for so long I'd forgotten I had it. Not sure of the year, but I love the handles on this one.

Re: camillus #72
Beauty Bob. Kinda hard to tell from that picture but it looks to me like a short-line bone handle, made from early 1947, when they dropped the pen blade and put in the small clip, until maybe sometime in the mid 1950s or so. It's kind of tricky trying to say when bone was dropped for synthetics. The 1957 catalog says Brownstag® handles which I've come to identify as the brown synthetic they used after bone and before Delrin® became common. (Rough black fits in there someplace.) The 1955 catalog says "Staged" which I'm reasonably certain was bone. The last of the short lines (supposedly 1950) and the advent of the long lines (generally accepted as 1960) is also tricky. Even though those dates are pretty much quoted throughout the collecting community, I don't hang my hat on 'em.

Not sure where that came from but here's one with the First Class shield. They are not rare but neither are they common. I have at least two and maybe three. The ones I've seen came only with the black synthetic handles and a long line stamp.carrmillus wrote:.....come to think of it, all I ever remember seeing on a Camillus scout was the round shield too, jerry!!!.....you may have a rare one, t.j.!!!!...........![]()
