Got my first deer of the season yesterday, a doe. I skinned and cut her up with an old Schrade-Walden H15 I bought from Mike313 last spring - wonderful hunting knife - sharp as a razor. The "selfie" was taken the afternoon before; I was hunting with my Marlin 1894 in a hardwood bottom in a little ladder stand (not much seat!!) On that hunt I saw a nice four-pointer moving through the woods, eating acorns at about 4:00 pm. The doe was shot early yesterday (0615) from a tower stand looking over a beanfield - used a scoped, lever-action M88 Winchester in .308 WIN to shoot her. OH

This young man is now 22; at his Dad's request I took him under my mentorship as a hunter when he was 14 - he shot this trophy eight point buck out of my beanfield stand on Monday afternoon about 3:15. This boy has been a pleasure to hunt with - he is inquisitive, interested, respectful, and willing to work hard on the farm and to get his hands dirty. I told him Monday evening that he was now a fully graduated hunter in his own right - and ready to keep learning about deer as long as he keeps hunting them. OH

Way to go Bruce! Your "student" got a "sur-nuf" good one! Can't eat them horns but they sure are nice !! Lookin' at the picture of the buck, that bean field must have really been wet earlier in the year, lookin' at the depth of the rut he is layin' in. I noticed your knife work on your doe on another thread.

We had the wettest spring and summer in years here, maybe in decades - things (like farming and hunting) have been different this year due to it all, but we are well out of a deep water-table drought we had barely recovered from last year. Funny how God has things ordered so that nature always rights itself - just not on my schedule! OH

Dogg, I gave him a fixed blade Leupold skinning knife several years ago - it came with a Leupold Century Limited 3-9 Scope set - scope, coin, knife, and sheath, in a 100th anniversary commemorative tin box. I bought the scope set at the MCX at Camp Lejeune on Veterans Day in 2007 or 2008 (man, those sets were a helluva deal that day - $147.00 - wish I could have bought several). You can see a bit of the knife in this picture, but I don't remember what company made the knife for Leupold - it could have been a Gerber. OH

Ps I have a personal tradition - each kid I take deer hunting gets a new skinning knife when he is ready to clean his first deer. I wait until we have the deer at the skinning rack, then ask' "where is your skinning knife?" Of course the thought has never crossed most of their minds before - so I ask them, "how you gonna clean that deer?" Then I give them a knife to use and keep. Several years ago I stubbled across a sale on the BuckLite #673 at a local gunshop - got four for $60.00 OTD - however they have all been given out now - gotta find some more!

I came across a Mossy Oak that might fit the pbill perfectly...but the handle is broke. Let me know if u want to look at it.....I'll send ya pics. If you like it you can have it..

Very nice OH As U know from past threads we gut'em first before they leave the wood as I always help the young hunter in my group gut there deer and I give them a 34ot or a 303 Buck for there first.

TJ, that is a political satire piece - a fabrication. I've been an NRA member and gun rights activist since 1977 - they have put out nothing about this, nor has NSSF. Both groups stay on top of these issues and report them when a credible risk is imminent. OH

You're probably right, OH. I searched that article top to bottom and left to right looking for a disclaimer and found none. Usually at the bottom of the article they admit to it's satire. But given the state of affairs in the U.S., it would not surprize me if it came to pass someday.

...........I used to fish with a buddy who wouldn't eat anything for lunch but "beanie-weenies", he would take a can, tear off the top, stick the can in his mouth, tilt his head back and glug-glug the whole can without ever stopping fishing.............. .......................
