Show Us Your Camillus Knives!

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Guys, I just got this 3rd #69 pattern. It was in very rough shape. Rust etc.
But I could tell from the pics it might be recoverable, and imo it was.

Excuse the poor indoor pics as it's been raining here for days. Anyway I got this last one from the Cape Cod area[explains the rust] where my family has ties and I notice it has 3 pins versus my other two have only one pin. Also the stamps are all different on the main.
The latest 3pin one has no fade in the coloring- the brown goes right up to the bolsters.

Would I be correct in assuming the last one[3 pin] is the oldest?
Thanks in advance and I'll post better pics when it stops raining.

Producer -- Yes, your long line with the "three pin" is the oldest one. Camillus stopped pinning the handles on the #72 in 1976 or 1977 and went to the post method of holding the handles on and I think the same went for the #69 Deluxe Stockman. Look inside the blade well on your other two #69s. You should see a round spot on the liner where the "post" on the handle is inserted. I would say this knife was made from sometime around 1965 or so until 1976.
"The latest 3pin one has no fade in the coloring- the brown goes right up to the bolsters."
That's just brought about by a good handle fit.

Your second knife with the italic script tang stamp is from sometime after 1976 (or so) until sometime in the 1980s. Not a rare tang stamp but nowhere near as common as the long line and the double line tang stamp.

Your third knife with the double line tang stamp was made sometime between approximately 1989 and the factory closing in 2007.

Now like me, you need to find one with bone handles. I have a Schrade Walden 861 (Camillus 69 clone) with bone handles but that doesn't count.

You are correct about the "round spot" but it's only in the "cleanest one".
The oldest and the "darker" one's don't have that.
The other two have like, inner liner seperators, in the blade well.
This is so neat! You're right, I need a bone one.

Rain stopped for a second-more pics.
ps I got the "old" one for $9.99 and $2.67 shipping. No one bid on it but me.
I'll try to post a pic of it "before" I cleaned it up.

Correction!
I found the "round thing" in the second knife also. My mistake jerry.
So the only one that doesn't have that is the oldest one.
Thanks for your help, I'm really liking this pattern.

It would appear so. Take a look at the handle materials on these catalog pages starting with 1946 through 1972. While you're at it take particular note of the handle material used on the 72s where shown.

Vit, that one appears to have bone handles. Am I correct? Excellent condition. Looks factory in the picture.

That is actually what they call it, in addition to faux ivory and ivoroid. It is a very stable celluloid. Those "corn knives" date to c. 1920 and before. I've got a couple that S.C. Johnson Wax gave out as sales incentives in 1919. Know this from emailing SCJ historian.

Waz -- What's MOBB? Not the correct initials for Mother Of Toilet Seat. As T.J. said, French Ivory is for real. Looks kinda similar to Waterfall Celluloid.

It may not look like a Camillus but it is one Camillus had made in Taiwan, IIRC.

Perhaps this knife is more to your liking Tommy-

I got this one from Mike, (vikingdog) last week.
Thanks Mike! ::tu::

The bone on this one is really nice, no chips or cracks I have found.
I had to re-pin the front blades. Someone had used a nail for a pin.
Fortunately they didn't peen it down too badly.

Here's one I didn't know they made, It's pretty rough shape but the handles are crack free and it has nice snap to it.
