China made Buck Creek

Post by just bob »

This is something you're seeing more and more of. The knife is stamped Germany Stainless and the seller is claiming made in Germany - big difference. This knife looks to have never been sharpened and has seen very little use and both backsprings are snapped and the handle is broken from stress. A pretty nice looking knife made from low grade metal and material. Not at all like the older German made Buck Creek knives.

Here's the saddest part. I asked the seller if they knew this was made in China. No doubt she is honest and so was her father. Here is what she said.

" Thanks Much! This is one left from my Dad's 40 yr collection. The only reason I don't believe it's china made. I have already sold the best part of it and am down to a few left. They have ruined a lot of good things."

I don't have a problem with SMKW selling these by the semi load and laughing all the way to the bank. If they weren't selling them someone else would be as long as there was a dollar to be made. My concern is that these knives should be clearly marked made in China and that marking be done in such a way that it could not be removed and would still be there years from now - if the knife lasted that long.

I agree completely. Sadly it's standard procedure for many brands now made in China to be marked in a manner that easily leads to confusion as to the country of origin. Hopefully most of us hard core knifers know better, but many casual buyers take one home convinced they've gotten a great buy on an American or German made knife.

Maybe a group of collectors or knife activists like Knife Rights should approach federal legislators about a law requiring all imported cutlery items to be clearly stamped "Made in ------" and have the name of the country in which the knife is actually made.
Set a minimum standard of depth which the stamping or etching must be cut into the blade. No more of these light surface etches, 1/32" minimum depth should be deep enough.
An exception could be made for disposable razor blades. A surface etch should be sufficient.

Knife Rights has had a lot of success with state legislators. Perhaps it's time they step up their game and go after federal legislation. It would eliminate a lot of fraud and deception currently taking place in the cutlery industry, where sellers try to lead the buyer to believe the product is American-made when it's actually important.

You would think giant retailer like SMKW would wield a lot of clout. What if they told their suppliers they would no longer sell knives from China unless they were clearly stamped MADE IN CHINA. Would it be possible for collector's to boycott SMKW unless they took some action. Again there is nothing wrong with a person buying a knife made in China so long as they are aware of it. I was at a flea market and saw a guy with a trunk load of China knives. He was telling people the steel and material for the knives was made in Germany and then shipped to China for assembly to save on labor cost. More misinformation than a tarot card reader.

SMKW actually owns some of the brand names that are in question . They place the orders where they want the knives made and they specify how they want them marked . To expect them to correct this problem would resemble the old "fox guarding the henhouse" scenario ! ::woot::

Did you notice that China manufactures who are making better quality knives stamp their knives CHINA.
China will make knives to the specification required by the wholesalers.
So wholesalers who are ordering cheap and low quality knives, that's what they get.

It's all about making a profit bigger using a brand they purchased when a factory closed .

I have been using a better quality China made knife for four years and its treated worst than and USA made knife because it was cheaper without any problems.
In this country you see items with the Australia flag .READ THE SMALL PRINT ON THE PACKET AN YOU SEE ASSEMBLED WITH AUSTRALIAN PARTS.(It was made with Australian iron ore )

I'm going to quit talking about junk made in China. Looks like it happens to the best of them. I was told by a welder that you could not weld spring steel. Is that true?
