EdgeMaker saying Hello

Post by EdgeMaker »

I am a Kentucky boy, new to this site just saying hello. I am interested in cutting tools from all perspectives, utilitarian uses, historical significance, pragmatic usefulness for whatever their purpose may be and their aesthetic beauty.

For as long as I can remember, one of my hobbies has been sharpening knives. Whenever any of my friends need anything from a knife to a chain from a chainsaw sharpened, they bring it to me. I gladly sharpen it for them. I very much enjoy working with the steel and coaxing it back into shape. I still like the old carbon steel but also like working and learning about all then new stainless steels and super steels that are being used in our tools and knives. I like learning how and why they all act and react differently to different sharpening techniques, how they hold up to different cutting tasks, what angles work best with which steels, etc. etc. etc.

I have fiddled around with making some custom knives and enjoy the activity but have a lot to learn about making them turn out just the way I want them to turn out. I can make them sharp, I just can't always make them look good.

Well enough for now. I look forward to many informative discussions with you ladies and gentlemen.

Welcome to AAPK. Glad to have you aboard. AAPK is more than a friendly forum, it's a learning place and it looks like you will fit right in because it sounds like you have a lot to teach us.

Welcome to AAPK. I spend a little time in Kentucky occasionally. My son lives in NW Tennessee just about 10 miles from the Kentucky state line. You gotta show us some of your knives. Heck we've even got a thread or two for sharpening stones and such!
