Greats posts from everyone.
Dimitri, that stamp must be really rare on that old Challemge Jack knife. 1st time I and I would imagine others on here have seen it. Thanks for posting it.

Here is another old one that dates in the late 1800's, a Binghamton Cutlery Co.

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
A BUNCH of neat old stamps in this thread, folks.
Here is one from a familiar old knife company - hope it fits in here.
A New York Knife Co. with the arched stamp. The bone handle is dry rotted.
Does anyone know the age of this rarely seen stamp?
Joe

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
I recently picked up a couple I hadn't previously heard of. First is a small pearl stamped Magnetic Cutlery Co. Germany. According to Levine's Guide this was a Philadelphia PA importer/wholesaler c1900-1932. Goins says most of their knives were made in Solingen by D. Peres.
Second is a small tortoise shell stamped Howes Cutlery Co. which was an importer c1900, apparently also made in Germany but not marked as such. If anyone knows anything else about these please advise.
These are good examples of "rare" doesn't necessarily mean "valuable "!

Re: Old Knives with Rare Tang Stamps
I've seen and owned a few with that stamp and though not certain I always figured it to be a very early NYK stamp. I did have 2 tiny pearl handled knives 4 blade knives that were mint and beautifully made. One was a 4 blade congress not much over 2" closed. I don't recall ever seeing that stamp on a celluloid handle NYK so that helps some with dating. Best guess pre-1910 just going by what I have seen.Joe Dirt wrote:A BUNCH of neat old stamps in this thread, folks.

Thanks for your info, Wayne!
I thought it was a pretty early stamp... often wondered if it was pre Hammer Brand?
I have only seen one other bone handle knife with this stamp!

Ken,as they say,one mans treasure is another man's trash,or something like that.If all we were looking for is commerce,we wouldn't appreciate these old treasures.
You and Joe have a couple of treasureable tuxedos. I have quite a few farmers jacks in that category.
Nice old stamp David,on a knife that didn't stay in a drawer.
Of course Roger has caught a live well full of unusual sunfish and Dimitri just opens another safe.
Here's a stamp I never heard of before, obviously made by Schrade(most likely early Schrade Cut Co).Bartlett MFG CO Detroit MICH
