Very cool Mike! Those are some happy kids there! Looks like it was a great time. That is what memories are made of right there.

My son is out in Elko, NV (I believe). He has been tent camping/hunting over a week now. He drew a few big game tags this year for Elk and Deer. Much easier to draw a bow tag here but the bow hunting is a hell of alot harder. A 200 yard rifle shot/kill is considered a "close shot" around these parts. Hunting with a bow is a whole different ball game of course. Very few trees.

He bagged a nice velvet buck bow hunting.

This young man sure is a expert hunter. In awe of his ability and determination when it comes to hunting as it certainly surpasses mine. Makes me proud for sure.

Regards, Jerry

Great picture, Jerry! How young was your son when y'all started hunting? Backing up a post or two and there's Mikes young children fishing. Good stuff! ::tu:: It's a shame that more children aren't exposed to the outdoors and grow to be active outdoorsmen and women :( .

Mike, the pictures of your kids are priceless.
My son and daughter started handling rods and reels quite early in their lives but don't fish much now.
I was compelled to dig out this picture of my sweet Fawn from about 20 years ago.
Thanks.

Thanks TF! The normal progession if you will as far as age. BB gun early, .22 hunting for rabbit and squirrel by 10 years old, birds in the early teens and big game at 15 years old. He kind of took off on his own after that as far as honing his hunting skills. Hunting with friends and occasionaly Dad gets a chance too. He is a guide level hunter and often takes his buddies and me as a guide when someone draws a tag.

I will never forget his first big game hunt (even Mom went along too). He was 15 or 16 years old. We are at the top of this mountain when across the valley we see some deer at about 800 yards or more. Even with a high power scope, I can barely see antlers. It was that kind of far! He was begging me to take a shot and where we were and the deer was, if he hit it we would have need to take a chainsaw and a skillet and cook it up right there. Would have been a bear to get it out.
Against my better hunting judgement, I let him take the shot with a 7mm MAG, first hunt and all. After hitting the dirt 2 feet below this bucks feet several times, I suggested a 4 to 6 foot holdover but of course, who listens to Dad at that age especially when your first bout of buck fever has kicked in. I called him off after 5 shots and after he got a huge "scope kiss" which produced a 2 inch high monkey bump over his eye. Funny stuff, "big game baptisim".
My other son has fishing fever, goes every week. The wife enjoys fishing very much and baits her own hook and is not afraid to get her hands dirty cleaning the catch. I am a lucky man.

You might say that all things outdoors are in this family's blood.

Thanks for the kind words fellas! Spending time in the great outdoors with the kids is priceless indeed.

Jerry that is a FINE looking Mulie your son got there, holy smokes! And with a bow too? Even more impressive...you must have raised him right.

Here's another pic from our recent trip..that's my daughter on one of our hikes in the Chequomegon Nicolet National Forest....I figure a mighty determined woodpecker spent a lot of time on this tree! I told Sofia to lean up against it, but she was reluctant to touch it!

Had a terrific charter fishing trip yesterday out of Morehead City NC. Left the dock at 0530; headed out to the Swansboro hole (50 miles) - caught Wahoo, Blackfin, and Mahi. Just a fine day on the water. OH

Been a while, but took the grandsons on a mission yesterday.....had a blast.
Let them swing the hatchet for a while. Made a new walking stick for one.
Saw 4 turkeys, hens. Up close....coulda killed 'em with a stone!

By the way do any of you outdoorsman have a box or slate turkey call you no longer use? I'd like to get one and take it on our next mission and let the boys try to get a response from a turkey call.....no hunting, just calling.

I can trade ya a knife or cash......PM me if you hve one!!

Thanks guys, I had such a great time my wife is worried (but she enjoyed eating the Dolphin.)

Scott, I've got an extra push-button call y'all can have if you want it - very easy for kids to use. BB

Thanks Bruce. Philco has committed to sending a box call.....I don't want anybody top think I'm gathering turkey calls by the pound, but I have 2 grandsons (4 and 6) and I'm sure they would love it......and it sounds easy to use.

Your call if you want to send it or not, just wanted you to know there is one on the way!

Hey Scott,
Happy Grandparent's Day! We found out it was Grandparent's Day when the pastor at church asked everyone that was a grandparent to remain standing, he then explained. I figure y'all ain't as backward as we are in LA so you probably knew about this great, under celebrated holiday ::shrug:: .
You're a glutton for punishment if you turn them grandsons loose with turkey calls! To liven things up a crow call, a predator call and a deer grunt could be used on your next safari :D ! ::poke::

Seriously, I applaud you for what you do with your grand kids ::not_worthy::!

Grandparent's Day????? I didn't know it existed. No telephone call. No card. Hmmm, must be another Hallmark Holiday.

Well, Happy belated Grandparent's Day to all of you who qualify!

I was out scouting around the hunting grounds this morning, and was happy to fine the apples and acorns are dropping from the trees! Spooked a trio of deer that were bedded down amongst the acorns...and those little apples are quite tasty, I can vouch for that. ::nod::

Yeah Jerry, I actually split one open and gave it a taste....then promptly spit it back out onto the forest floor! Not the tastiest nut in the woods...although the squirrels and deer sure do love them. I remember reading somewhere that the Indians used to eat acorns in some form or another...maybe dried them, crushed them and made them into some sort of flour? Something like that.... I did however fill up my pockets and load some out for Sofia, she loves it when I bring her back "treasures" from the woods.

Now those apples on the other hand...those were tasty.

Scott, I hope you get the chance to return to the north someday and spend some time in the woods you miss so much.
