Thanks. That narrows it down and lines up with the explanation from the gentleman I purchased the gun from. He said he had it for at least thirty years and he got it from his uncle who lived in CA. From some other research I did, I found that the California Highway Patrol utilized the model 28 as their standard issue service revolver. So the story makes since. Sounds like the gun is 35+ years old. "CTG" is stamped on the barrel. See 3rd pic. What does CTG stand for?

Opening day of dove season was this past Monday in NC, opened 30 minutes prior to sunrise (I got there about 0740). Not much corn has been cut yet (cool, wet summer) so not much to draw a lot of birds to the area. Our club has a big opening day hunt, so we have a sunflower and corn field that was ready, had some birds, but not a huge number. I had birds flying from 0800 until 1030 and managed to drop 8 dove with 17 rounds. The guys who could hit a bird did as well (lots of guests on opening day and LOTS of skybusting!!) These pictures are of me and my 16 gauge Browning (older than me), my best hunting buddy Jim, flanked by his son and grandson, and a view of the field from my spot on the ditch bank; most of my birds are shot right over the ditch, it's a longtime funnel area for the birds. Lots of fun and the ceremonial opening of the fall hunting seasons. OH
Ps Did I mention the pig that Brian the Farmer cooked - umm, umm, Aunt Bee, some kinda good!

Hey Phil (and all), have you heard of these Argentina Dove Hunts. I travel sometimes and I have talked to some hunters first hand so this in not just a internet search.
In Argentina which is a huge country, the doves are like flies in some parts, "the sky turns light tan" as I heard it described from the several hunters I spoke to. This is not for me as this is slaughtering, in my opinion, instead of hunting.
You have to buy the ammo from the guides as no ammo brought along is allowed, some guys are spending 5 to 7 grand US on a week hunt for ammo alone (not travel or initial fee, etc included) and killing 5000 or more doves (Five Thousand!). These guys are going out for a 3 or 4 hour morning hunt session and killing 400 (not an extra "0", I mean four hundred plus dove) or more Dove and that is just in the morning.
To each his own but just not my thing.

FTD, I like the 290 but do not own one. No external slde release and extra tool required that could get lost is a turn off for me personally. But, this is a concealed gun so even a very flush external lever can catch on clothing during a need to draw quickly. How often do you field strip a concealed carry anyway.
I personally love the larger SIGs that have the external slide release lever where I can field strip a P226 for example in about 5 seconds.
Looks like you lock back the slide and insert this tool in the slide notch to release the slide and continue to field strip. Please let me know because like Phil, I would like to know.
I love SIG and probably the only new handguns I will buy if any, but the details like this can steer me towards or away from a maker or particular maker's model. Just how I personally do it.

In our immediate area, dove hunting is not what it used to be as lots of the once crop land in now in planted pines. Haven't done a real dove shoot in years . As for the South American dove hunts, an acquaintance went a few months ago and the pictures were unreal and the numbers Jerry mentioned are accurate. It seemed an odd time to hunt but the seasons are reversed being on the other side of the equator. He said the birds are donated to locals and are appreciated.

Philco. This is a new piece for making field stripping a Sig alot easier. When you open the slide you stick this piece in the ejection port and it will hold it open to the right spot to drive the pin out so you can clean it! I hope this clears up your question. ftd

Thanks for explaining it to me. Makes perfect sense now.
I know it can be tricky on some pistols getting the slide in just the right position to be able to remove the pin.

I took these three Remington .30-06 rifles to the range last week for a side-by-side comparison.
The top one is a M1917 made by Remington in August 1918. The middle is a Remington 1903-A3 made in 1943.
The bottom is the model 700 I got in the late 1990s.
Of course, with the scope the 700 had the tightest, most accurate group (2 MOA). The M1917 was next with a 5 - 6 MOA, and lastly was the American classic, the 1903A3 with a 4 - 7 MOA group range. I fired five shot groups at 50, 100, and 200 yards. I think at a longer range or with a strong crosswind, the '03 would have outperformed the 1917, as it has a rear sight with adjustable windage. As it was, they were very close.
I shot all rounds through a chronograph, and I love it when theory matches real life. The 1917 has the longest barrel (26"), and of course, the highest and most consistent bullet velocity (2836 fps). The 1903 with its 24" barrel averaged 2811 fps. And my modern 700 with a 22" barrel only managed a muzzle velocity of 2715 fps.
I used military surplus .30-06 ammo for all rifles. (Greek HXP 1973 surplus)
IIRC, all barrels have a 1:10 twist rate.

I tried some Lawman Ammo in my Glock 22 40 cal today shooting at 15 yards.
Not to bad of a cartridge for the price.

Got this rifle in a couple weeks ago.......Winchester Model 70 Sporter in .25-06. This is a stock photo, will try to get a pic of the one I bought soon. (also have one on the way in .264 Win Mag)

You fellers posting those beautiful 1911s reminded me I finally finished my old '43 Colt rebuild.
The slide is original Colt, but the frame and internals are modern day. I've been waiting on the barrel for months. Finally got her built. I stopped by the farm and fired this 14 shot, 4 inch group today (10 yards, standing).
Also tried out my reloads. I was trying to get down to around 750 fps, but I'm still a little high. 14 shots averaged 791 fps. I still need to work on the trigger some cause it's about a 12 pound pull right now!

Trev, that is a good looking model 70. I have a buddy looking for one chambered in 7mm-08. Remington 700s are a dime a dozen around here, but the Winchesters are hard to find.

Excellent looking and shooting pistol there RBD.

For quite a few years my go to deer rifle has been a Browning A-Bolt II in 7mm-08, one of the finest medium sized game calibers out there imo.
If he is seriously looking at the Model 70, make sure to suggest that he check out guns with the M.O.A. trigger system, every bit as good as what they claim......beyond excellent even compared to high end aftermarket trigger groups.
