knife collector's educational/resource books

I have never seen a thread like this and thought it would be interesting and a great place to exhibit one's knife catalogs, resource and educational books and materials. What do you use? What would you recommend?

Rocky I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you suggesting the books be available for one to read hands on? Or make a thread to let others know what's books he or she may own to ask questions of the books contents? I think it would be a useful and knowledge able thread.

I guess what I am suggesting is for others to show various reference books/material they use in collecting, knife identification or education of specific cutlery companies history and the knives they produced. Maybe discuss the value of some books, and discourage others and why. Books are very expensive and some are repetitive and a waste of money. Others are very valuable and are essential guides in knife collecting. Maybe it could be a source/place for trading books, selling books related to knife collecting or just recommendations. Journals, articles, resource material that would guide any knife collector. I don't know just brain storming and trying to add additional resource that would be valuable and in some way benefit our members and the new collector/member.

Now that's what I'm talk in' about!

what do you have or have heard of that is a great book on Remington? I use the Rem past and present as a check off of my collection and as a quick reference when on eBay.

do you have recommendations? Here's a few must haves that others I think would agree if your collecting CASE cutlery. The other is the price/value cutlery guide

Side note, I really like the home made binder resource. Great idea and great resource tool!

yep,rocky....we're info junkies!!!

i write down names of the book when i see em.......
then do a ebay search for USED (sometimes i score new) books.........i find them for around $5-$20 shipped..........i buy the older ones even,as some NOT ALL have a few maker NAMES/DATES/CO. INFO in the index part....which helps in research.....

i NEED a GOINS

....soon i hope to find one.

the old books usually have a few makers that have dropped off the radar......

i honestly DO NOT use any of my books to PRICE a knife.....i let the market at the present time do that.
i know some do.....i choose not to.
those prices in a book do help me at times..... to LOOK HARDER INTO A KNIFE if priced high and not on ebay advanced search..........

on remmy books:
the PAST AN PRESENT and the C30 catalog are the best 2 i have personally found so far.......

i have not heard of a better source for the pre ww2 remmies.......YET

Goins is a must, and I HIGHLY recommend Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery by Gerald Witcher. It is a great read.

Steve's book on Case knives is also incredible.

Old catalogs are great too, but tough to get your hands on.

Here are some of my library of knife related books.I have many others;notably the American Blade from Vol 1#1 up until the mid 1980's plus the National Knife collector magazines from almost the inception and some original catalogs including a Maher&Grosh from the 1890's.I would like to post pics of these but they are buried in my basement in a bookcase behind my son's bed.
I will have to do two posts as there are more than ten pictures.
You can NEVER have too many reference books.

THE KNIFE MAKERS WHO WENT WEST by Harvey Platts, Longs Peak Press, 1978, out of print, rare, superb (and only) reference on WESTERN STATES and WESTERN CUTLERY of Boulder, Colorado, by one of the owners and heir and member of the family. These generally run about $100 but if you have to pay more it is worth it; an exceptional book.

HEAR THE HAMMER by Smith, Towsley and Mandell, privately published and readily available (in perhaps second edition?) on ebay. A history and discussion of Rudy Ruana knives of Bonner, Montana. and....
the sequel, THE HAMMER STILL RINGS, by Towsley.

IDENTIFICATION GUIDE TO REMINGTON SHEATH KNIVES 1925-1940 by D.Y. Grimm, privately published, out-of-print, a treasure!!

REMINGTON KNIVES PAST & PRESENT by Ron Stewart and Roy Ritchie. Probably the definitive text on their folders.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MARBLES KNIVES & SPORTING COLLECTIBLES by Arni Dunathan, out of print but it comes up now and then. Very good.
and...
MARBLES KNIVES & AXES by Konrad F. Schreier Jr., a lesser tome but also very good.

600 SCOUT KNIVES by Joseph Richard Kerr. Yup, 173 pages of them. and...
OFFICIAL SCOUT BLADES by Ed Holbrook.

The book on CASE knives by Steve P and of course Levine's 4th are top of the line.

THE U.S. M-3 TRENCH KNIFE OF WORLD WAR TWO by Vincent J. Coniglio and Robert S. Laden. Outstanding.

Another great reference is New England Knifemakers by Phil Pankewicz(sp?).Not many knife pictures but covers NE manufacturers very thoroughly.

Not exactly a reference BOOK but rather a visual reference to knives and other weapons of the Philippines.The base is made of plywood;the knives are made of thin pieces of engraved aluminum;the handles are wood.The names of the various knives are listed below each with some spelling variations.
I had two of these but traded one away.

Great books Dale! I see a lot of familiar faces in there.I wish I could share some of the images in these books;especially the Parker book on Rodgers exhibition knives and the Greg Martin Auction books;the photography is just as great as the knives pictured.
A good friend of mine who lives in town has an amazing library of knife books and catalogs as well.He also has an amazing collection of English dirks,many custom knives from makers in Michigan and his prize piece:a Michael Price ivory handled ring guard dagger.
The Price knife is an absolute marvel of workmanship.Double edged;the center line looks like it was made with a drop line and the absolute lack of waves in the blade is beyond belief.Considering this knife was probably ground on a hand cranked wheel(pre-electricity)it rivals the finish of any custom knifemaker today.There was a copy made of this knife by a noted maker using the original to go by and it sold for somewhere in the high four figure range.Can't even imagine what the original is worth.
I guess this is why I'm attracted to older knives;to see the workmanship and know that they were made without the benefit of modern machines and materials.
Anyway thanks for posting up your books;it is motivating me to go down the basement and dig out my books.
