Marbles pivot pin

Post by wiseguy »

Any tips fellas before I go and mess it up . Very odd in that the pins are still in the bolsters and im not sure how to proceed . My first thought was to put the blade back in and try to drive the pin into the blade one side at a time and remove . Could use a little help

Perhaps some washers for support in the liners ::hmm:: ......I guess I need to know if I can just drive the pins threw or will it need to be drilled

That's a pretty $$$$ knife. Whatever you do be very careful. I wouldn't want to employ much guess work on a knife of that value. One small mistake could add up to big bucks. Every knife is different and what would work on one knife may not work on another of the same type.

Drill, punch drive, press, punch drive & drill, disassemble and punch out from the inside? Hard to say without seeing it first hand.

That's a fine looking old Marble's there.

It can be fairly straight forward, if you have the right tools and experience. I'm sure Trevor already had some great ideas for you, and Wayne's tips are spot on, and here's also what I would do.

First, you have to be able to see the pins in the bolsters. If you can locate them safely, then you can drill out one side. Start with a very small drill bit, so you don't ream out the hole by mistake. A stiddy would be very helpful, as you want to support only the top side bolster at this time. Once you have that hole drilled through, you may be able to go up a size or 2 in drill bits. What we are trying to is take away material from the pin, so it can be punched through. By removing the excess material, you are giving the pin a way to collapse in on itself when punching it through to the inside.

If you are successful getting that pin out, what I usually do next is punch the other side's pin out from the inside. The pin should be regular size on the inside for the most part, so should be easier to punch inside-out. Be sure to back the bolster with leather or something to keep the bolster from getting marred.

If you are not comfortable doing any of that stuff, then I do NOT recommend you do this work yourself. It's too pretty of a knife and can get ruined easily.

Thanks guys , sounds like it`s fairly straight forward . I have just never seen a blade out of a knife and the pin still in both bolsters so I had to ask first . ::tu::

Looks to me like it just sheared off internally...

Small pin relative to blade size is probably a good part of it. Then factor in a dull blade and someone trying to force it. Over time, the pin gets stressed/stretched a bit, and eventually fractures. I've seen it happen a couple of times, both involving trying to overwork the knife when the blade is dull.

Could also be a lack of lube at the pivot may cause more friction than there should be, which would put a lot of stress on that pin...
