Anyone Collect Axes & Hatchets?

A nice Mann Knot Klipper from the flea market yesterday. The markings are clear on this one which seems to be unusual. Also, a PLUMB Jersey pattern that a friend gave me.

I'm happy to say that the Kelly Hand Made Puget Sound felling axe is finally complete. I finally received the handle (after waiting 2.5 weeks) on Friday and finished her up yesterday. I think it came out well, considering the work I had to put in! I did the final sharpening before blueing the head, that's why the edges are the same color as the rest of the head. I generally do this on all axes that I will not use, in order to keep the rust away from the edges. This will be a display axe, and I think that's the best use for it. These are very rare in my area of the country, and I think it will look great on my wall.

First picture is a before picture, for those who didn't see it a little over two months ago.
Second picture is of a close up of the head after everything has been completed.
Third picture shows the final product, zoomed out enough to see the whole thing.
Fourth picture shows the front of the sheath. The back has no strap, with two different logos.

I've also got a lot more to post, mainly all of the finds that I've gotten over the past few months. I will do them as soon as I can.

Here's my haul from this past weekend. It was definitely one to remember, my best weekend by far. Found 11 axes total, a rasp, a file, a coping saw, and an old hammer.

Axes include:
Plumb Champion double bit, Mann Edge True American single bit, Keen Kutter single bit, True Temper Kelly, Perfect single bit, Vaughn Value Brand single bit boy's axe, No-name double bit, Diamond Edge (possibly) single bit, Woodlings-Verona single bit, True Temper single bit (not a Kelly), True Temper Kelly Perfect double bit, Kelly Works Falls City

Unfortunately, I think someone sanded off a lot of the stamping on the Plumb Champion. Still, I know that's what it is. It does have the star on the backside, showing it was made in Australia. May have to keep it for my personal collection. Picture attached after a brief cleaning, the axe is in good shape other than the stamp.
The Mann True American was also in very good shape. Picture attached, after only a few hours in vinegar.

I finally wandered over to this part of the forum. Great thread here, and some beautiful axes and hatchets everyone!

I don't have a lot of need for an axe or hatchet, but need does not always equate to want. I was pawing through an antique store a few months ago, and picked this one up.

It's an Underhill Edge Tool Co. hatchet. It's been well used, and probably needs a new handle, but the price was right so I popped on it.

Underhill Edge Tool co. looks to have started around 1850, with most of their production taking place in Nashua, NH. They were later bought by American Axe. I don't really have a date for this piece, but I would wager late 1800's-early 1900's.

Bit of history - The axe used in the famous Lizzie Borden murder case was an Underhill...

I scored these this past weekend....
One is 3 3/4lb Made in Sweden and the other I believe reads: Charleston _ _ _ ___ _ _ _ US _, so I'm guessing it's a Kelley made in Charleston VA. USA.

Those should clean up nice TripleF. Soak them in vinegar or just try some GOJO waterless hand cleaner and steel wool.

A couple of junkers from the flea market today, before and after photos. The double bit is a PLUMB the single bit is marked Clear Cut. I need to do some file work on the PLUMB.

I would personally call both of them hatchets, but that's just me! I've heard people call it a boy's axe/hatchet before, but I've never heard the term hand axe!
