camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

That Rigid is a cool looking little knife there Cuz. I had no idea about the history of the company either. Thanks for sharing that.

Gary if you mean actual manufacturers, then probably a half dozen or less. If you mean tang stamps then I have probably between 20 and 30. That's just a guess, I have never sat down and counted tang stamps.

The vast majority were actually made by Camillus with Schrade/Ulster/Imperial coming in second.

Picked up an 84-11 Powr-Kraft this past week. From the seller's pictures, it looks like it may be in better condition than my other Powr-Krafts. I'll find out this coming week when it gets here. Probably made by Camillus in the late '60s or early '70s. Meanwhile, seller's pictures.

Tommy, the Powr-Craft 84-11 was made by Camillus for Montgomery Wards.

A good portion of my pile has the Camillus tang stamp and probably at least half of those with a tang stamp other than Camillus were made by Camillus. I'd say 90% of the rest of the clones were made by Schrade/Ulster/Imperial. In my opinion, only a handful were made by someone other than the big four. I need one more to have seventy two 72s (and clones). Now I'm looking for a tang stamp not already in the pile. I started inventorying them this morning but quickly became bored with that chore.

Jerry that knife is a bit different to my Powr Kraft. The Powr Kraft I have is the same as a Camillus 80 with black handles and does not have any numbers.

Does yours have jimping, nickel silver liners and pins? I have three Powr-Krafts that have 84-11 pattern stamp on the back of the main blade and one Powr-Kraft just like a Camillus 80 with no pattern stamp on the back of the main blade.

Tommy -- I don't have a Cussin and Fearn Hardware and I don't have a Moor Mans'. With this pattern being so popular, I imagine there are more I don't know about. Those two are just the ones I've "seen". I didn't know the Amplough 52 existed until I saw and bought one off eBay.

Thanks to Grant for the heads up and thanks to the seller for refusing to ship to Australia.

The newest edition to my pile of Camillus 72s and clones is a High Carbon Steel, blade etched STA-SHARP Wood Carver 9511. Made by Camillus for Sears. Several handle cracks but otherwise in very good condition. It has half-stops on both secondary blades. Note the 1st generation blade compliment. I know the Kastor List says High Carbon Steel with the STA-SHARP blade etch was made from 1928 to 1940 but I'm convinced this is a 1946 knife.

The handles are an early plastic, possibly celluloid judging from some of the ones I have seen deteriorate.
