Schrade display cases time line

I am surprised no one has mentioned this auction
Oak SCHRADE POCKET KNIFE Display Case 1890s Item number: 180141176269 . That Just went off I was a bit surprised actually very surprised at the price it brought. Perhapes I should dust mine off now that i know what it is worth. Of course mine is filled with knives not empty display boxes so it might even bring a bit more. I mention the display boxes because while very desirable were not used in this type display they were used in the larger shelf floor models. The seller when I contacted him was a nice guy and I was infact considering making a bid because I could have driven to pick it up ( only an hour or so away ). However at over 1700 dollars I will have to content myself with the one I have. When I spoke to him I did mention that since Schrade did not go into business until 1903 his ad claiming 1890s was incorrect. I advised him that the first cses had etched glass this model was from the late 20 and thirtys into the early 40tys since it was oak and glass with painted glass ( no etch ) the 40tys editions were also oak but were painted on the wood. the fiftys were wood painted simply on cheaper wood . As the years went by the display materials continued to change ( and cheapen ) . I have included a few of the models from this era ( there are many more) some of which I have and some I am looking for however these pics will give some example of what I am talking about. Man what a price this one went for Golly Gee Gulp. The winner has a feedback of one I hope for the sellers sake he is legit. For those of you on the look out for displays perhapes these pics may help a bit. I have the later ones that most people are familiar with however these rare older versions seem to be the most confusing for collectors to identify. LT PS I have on occasion posted some of these but I wanted to take this opportunity to show this time line.

LT , man what a price for that case! you did not get the case but you have
the knowledge of the past , and this is worth a million cases! .thank you for taking this opportunity to show us this time line. I really enjoy the history lesson and the pics

What a fine, fine selection of display cases. Your display cases are truly impressive.
I, too am really surprised at the price the Ebay case brought. I have sold a few old cases on Ebay and none have brought any amount that justifies all the trouble they are to ship.

Wonderful, LT. I love seeing this stuff. There is no better way to display a knife-- I think-- than in a real dealer;s display case. I buy them when I can, prices can be dirt low or unreal high.

If any one remembers the large Keen Kutter case I posted here are some pics I did get it home from Manhatten I did get it in the house somehow. It is even intact. I had to buy modern display brackets since I just could not find originals . I even offered to buy them out of antique display cases being used in antique stores. I had to get new shelving since the ones with it were just regular thin glass. Luckily for the man who has at least one of everything I had thick non tempered giant pieces which a friend dropped off one day ( a couple of years ago thinking someday I might need them ). I just had to get them cut, another guy I know cut them in about 30 seconds. Cutting glass correctly always amazes me. These pics are not great but they should give an idea, the glare in that room makes pics really rough. LT PS this display will probably change but I had to make some room by filling it up.

My family moved to Walden when I was 8. That was when my interest in Knives from the area began. at 10 ( when my parents decided it would be better to divorce than to kill each other I moved to Ellenville ) where Schrade had relocated to, the rest of my life in one way or another has always seemed to bring me back to the subject . Since I just turned 61 I guess that means that I have been doing this for hummm lets say a while. Knowing 5 generations of cutlers and there familys, having worked in the local state institutions ( now the areas largest employer ) as well as living in Wallkill 3 miles from Walden certainly certainly did not dissuade my interest in the study of this history and its artifacts. Since childhood the various stories and urban legends surrounding this history always seemed to push me to find out what truth ( if any ) was behind these tales. LT
