Violet got her first chore in this morning - not too tough a job, cutting open the Weed & Feed bag - but the bag has some violet coloring in the graphics os it was a good start - we are off and running here. OH

Handled a fine, lite chore well; cutting an article from the newspaper without dragging or tearing (very nicely shaped blade tip). Going to go turkey hunting tomorrow and do some DW cutting next Tuesday. OH

Used Violet today to cut samples from sheets of drywall; Violet is as fine a DW knife as I've ever handled. The thick blade and spring make for a very solid lock; the well shaped handle and blade fit good in the hand for scoring the paper, much better than the razor knives normally used for the task. This design carries nicely in the pocket (light and easy) but is plenty strong to work with everyday. Nice work Glennbad! Who is next? OH

Well hello, beautiful.

Just got home at 20:00, after working a 14 hour day. Saw a box for me in the mail. I thoughtlessly set it aside while I made my evening coffee and settled in after a stressful day. Opened up the box to find this little treasure. No velvet baggies for this lady. She arrived nestled comfortably in a plastic bag and wrapped in bubble wrap.
I decided that Violet wasn't gonna get any spoiling this week (well maybe just a little). So I immediately put her to work by slicing open a plastic case of Lipton Green Tea. She's pretty sharp, this little lady.
First impressions: At 3 5/8" closed length, Violet is just 1/8" longer than what I usually like to carry. She's nice and slim, so that will help. Violet has an awkward, almost unfinished look about her. But not in a bad way. I think it is the way the blade slopes down into the handle, while the handle swells upward at the same time. Like the tip of the blade gets lost diving into the deep blue/violet waves of water the color you find in an old quarry pond. Individually, the blade shape is slender and strong. While the handle is no-nonsense git-er-dun businesslike. When opened, the blade looks a little too short, and the handle looks a little too long. I know it sounds like I don't like her looks - but quite the opposite is true.
Violet has a home spun, girl next door beauty about her. She's kind of like the supermodel who is just ever so slightly cross-eyed. I like that about her. She's just barely short of perfection.
Now on to function: She's already proven she's sharp. The back spring is pretty stout. Not quite stout enough for me. But pretty good. Opening, closing, and half-stop is very tight. I like the blade shape and love the way it is built for strength, with the thick spine, yet tapers to a delightfully sharp cutting edge. The tip of the blade looks perfect for delicate work. The swelled end of the handle will be helpful in keeping a firm grip while cutting.
All in all, so far I think she'd be perfect if the blade was about 1/8" longer and the handle about 1/8" shorter. The deep blue/violet jigged bone is exquisite. Functionally, everything is nice and tight, no wobbles.
I'm gonna give her the spa treatment tonight or tomorrow, and then proceed to beat the crap out of her for the next week or so. I think she can handle it.
She ain't no prom queen. She's the beautiful girl next door!

Violet spent the day with me at work. She's a hard working knife. I started her out today doing some duct work. We relocated the vacuum system on one of our machining centers. Violet can now say she had a hand in making some high tech automotive parts. Afterwards, she helped open a few boxes containing some electronic parts.

Right now, she's getting a well deserved polishing. Was gonna sharpen her after all the hard work today, but she's still holding a sharp edge, so perhaps the date with Dr. Lansky can wait until tomorrow.

Blue you post got me to wondering how many times she's been sharpened since she left Glenbads place. I touched her up on some crock sticks but that was the extent of the sharpening I gave her. Anybody else sharpened her ?

This got me thinking. Is it possible that the heat treat on the screwdriver blade is different than on the standard knife blade?

Violet came to me plenty sharp from Dale Orvet - I also touched her up (like I do to all my knives) on ceramic sticks. OH

Beats me, but she's still plenty sharp. I just assumed it was 1075 steel.
Violet stayed busy again today. She got to do a lot of electrical work. There are a couple of things she really enjoys. One is stripping wire insulation. Did that for a couple of hours today. Must be a flashback from her past life. The other is opening packages. I didn't get any photos of her in action as an electrician today, but here is one of her opening a package at home, as well as a glamour shot outside.

I did sharpen her and polished the edge on my PowrStrop, which is just a leather wheel with jeweler's rouge on it.

The blade did seem a little softer to me than a TL-29 blade. I just went back and read that it was made from a reprofiled screwdriver blade.

I would think the screwdriver blade is softer than the spear blade because of the sideways torque applied when turning a screw. If the screwdriver blade was as hard as the spear blade it would probably chip, (like knife blades that are used for screwdrivers).

I haven't had much time for taking pictures, but Violet has had a busy week. She's made a pair of tire tread sandals, done a LOT of electrical work, sliced a lot of paper, opened a lot of packages, field dressed the neighbor's chicken (who foolishly made a habit of crowing outside my bedroom window), and made a dozen "fuzz-sticks" for starting fires this coming winter.
Oh yeah, I'm embarrassed to say she also was used as a screwdriver a couple times. I know better, but she came through like a champ.
I STILL haven't sharpened her yet…. washed and oiled, but not sharpened.

I'd love to take her to ATL for the BLADE show, but that would mean I'd keep her for about three weeks, and I know ol' Luis is on pins and needles, awaiting his turn!

Been a few days since an update, but Violet has been in my pocket every day. Even though longer than what I usually carry, this knife feels very comfortable in the pocket. I don't even notice she's there most of the time. Sometimes I have to check to make sure she's still there. Lot's of electrical work and package opening every day. Yesterday I did some wood carving. About all I can do is little flowers and vines. The sharp blade point is excellent for carving duties.
Today Violet played a little slide guitar. Lots of fun, this little knife.
Violet is getting excited about the BLADE show next week! (Me too, I must confess)
