What glue should I use?

Post by 0078 »

I have a little puma lock back, the skins are not pinned what would be the best glue to use to reattach them? Also what's the best or easiest way to get the old glue off. the frame is brass and the skins look stag or non bone. Looks like someone has tried to glue it in the past. Thanks for any help

Devcon 2 part epoxy 5 minute cure is what I use. There are a number of similar products on the market. You can scrape off the old glue with a knife or razor blade. Clean the surfaces to be glued and it doesn't hurt to rough them up a bit with coarse sandpaper. Mix equal parts of the epoxy thoroughly and apply it to both the knife frame and handles then clamp in place and let the epoxy cure. Be careful to make sure the handles stay aligned while clamped. You can clean off any of the left over epoxy with a sharp blade.

Don't use Gorilla Glue. It expands a bit.

There have been a lot written on glues. I use Loctite, never failed, and that is the brand I like. I quit Devcon long ago and have never missed it but it was the easiest to get for sure.

I'm an extensive user of Gorilla Glue, and for the short time it was around, sumo glue. Expanding poly glues are generally tougher than the stuff you are holding together, providing your surface prep is on par. I've literally had to grind handle scales off if something went wrong during assembly, and heaven help you if you bonded G10 , CF, Micarta or wood together (the substrate will split and shear before your glue joint does)

What type of Loctite are you using?
