winchester moose question

are the winchester moose's carbon or stainless?

who besides Case makes a carbon moose? (I don't like the case version)

I like the vintage knives version, but a little too high for my low budget.

I know that Bulldog Brand made a Moose with Carbon steel. The knives made from 1984 to 1995 were quite good. Camillus made one also, I've also seen a Moore Maker. Schatt and Morgan, I'm unsure of the steel in the Moore Maker and Schatt and Morgan, the latter more than likely is stainless. Seems like I remember a Parker, but that may be the surgical steel for Japan.

Hi Wildcat.

It is my understanding that the Winchester knives made/marketed by Bluegrass Cutlery Company were made with carbon steel. I have quite a few of them and this seems the case to me anyway. And Hukk is right about the Bulldogs too. Also, I only own one Moore Maker and it is a fine knife.

The Moore Maker is 1095 High Carbon.

I've got the Winchester black box moose from 1988, made by Blue Grass. My understanding also was that these are carbon. I just took a look at the knife and box, and there's no indication of the steel anywhere. I'm pretty comfortable that it's carbon, not stainless.

The Winchester is not as large as some moose's, and is a very nice size IMO and pocketable. 3 3/4" closed as opposed to 4" or 4 1/4 like a lot of other moose's.

Hey Wildcat, Collectorknives has a Winchester Moose in carbon right now.
It's the only one I've been able to find that's available.
I was interested in it because of its resemblance to G.W.Sears' moose.

yep, I saw that one. I am in the process of acquiring a minty moose as we speak. I will post pics when i get it in my grubby paws.

The 1988 Winchester Moose is definitely made with Carbon blades. I use several of these winchesters as EDC and have been very pleased. I just gave this moose the vinegar treatment and the blades darkened up nicely. I personally like how the Winchester large moose has the spear blade instead of the spey. The only thing I don't like about this knife is that it's a nail breaker, especially on the Clip blade. I have several of these and this seems to be the situation with all of them. Overall these winchesters made by Queen are well built knives.
