I want to thank forum member "IMband" for helping me find this thread,,and i wanted to share with you a discussion on a forum that I moderate on..concerning the mercator name..that happened to come up. A pocket knife..with a modern day junk inscription came into discussion. The knife was authentic..but the addition to the grip plates were bogus. here is the thread below to which i have given the AAPK credit. Thank you ...you have a wonderful site here

Unfortunately the Central had been compromised a bit by an overzealous cleaner. Still whole and all original though.

This is an old bowie knife with a hand tooled leather belt and sheath. There are no stamps or marks on the knife at all. If anyone knows the maker of this knife I would like to know.

His murder was a contributing factor to events leading up to the Mountain Meadows massacre a few months later. In September 11, 1857 the Mormons killed 120 people from the Baker–Fancher party who were traveling to Southern California along the Mormon Road (a portion of the Old Spanish Trail). Parley Pratt had a total of 30 children, and his living descendants in 2011 were estimated to number 30,000 to 50,000.

TJ, those are both very pretty. The stamped shield of the Empire is great.
I really like that H&B Wayne, it has very nice jigging

When I first saw the blade shape it reminded me of those 1950's era German bowies that seemed to be everywhere but one lool at the scales and particularly the sheath dispelled that notion.Not having seen many(any?)knives made pre-1900 with jigged bone scales(usually stag or rarely wood)I will have to defer to Dimitri on that.The belt is a most interesting adjunct;did it come with the knife? The knife itself definitely looks to be factory made rather than a one off.Whatever the case I like it.

My father referred to it as the Mountain Man Knife. I don't know when the knife was made. The belt and sheath came with it. The leather sheath fits so tight that it is actually cutting through the leather so you have to be careful when removing or placing the knife back into the sheath.

Had this in q and a when i got it, the knife is fine, guess they put it up when the handles got broke..
which helped it stay in the shape it is, fine example of a rare model, Plus it being with rare handle material.
i washed it and done a little bone repair. I looked in what few outdated books i have and none, mentioned
this bone on this model

I found this one a few weeks ago and there is very little information and Goins just list their name which is R Groves & Sons Limited. I looked them up and found they were a manufacturer of Saws and a steel refiner. They started in 1770 and I know that they were still in business till at least 1879. The knife has Teacher 1830 on the Sterling Silver handle. This is a nice little knife for possibly being over 180 years old!

This enterprise was established in 1770 (according to their advertising and catalog cover) and was a well know producer of saws and steel refiner.

In the "Reminiscences of Old Sheffield, Its Streets and Its People" Robert Eadon Leader (1875), describes this outfit as "Steadfast to their old localities in Snow hill are Richard Groves & Sons, perhaps the oldest saw manufacturers in the town. Mr. Groves, the grandfather of the present firm, always had an open Bible before him on his work-board."
