Stag Difference

Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between Stag and 2nd cut Stag? I'm sure i'm asking a dumb question but I'd like to know the difference.

Generally speaking, stag shows the "bark", or decorative outer layer.
After you cut it off, sometimes you have a second layer of smooth but useful material, so you jig it or texture it, and use it for handles; hence the "second cut"! It most often looks like jigged bone 'till you look close.
Only un-asked questions are dumb!

That is a real nice knife!!





Here is a Bulldog that has been "stagged" to look like the outer bark.

With the bulldogs like the one in the picture I call that Bone Stag. To me it clearly looks like bone that has been dyed and jigged to look like stag.

Looks like bone to me too, Lobo, just because that's a common bone jig now. But a magnified look is the only way to be sure!

You guys might be right.

I don't have it any longer to check the pores and such, but it was sold by the Parkers, from the Bulldog catalog, as "genuine" Winterbottom stag. The only catalog I could find right now is the 2005. On page 22, they are (were) advertising "Winterbottom Stag" Congress patterns...
discovered in that famous "VAULT" they have.

I was always of the opinion that when it comes to Bulldog that 2nd cut stag is bone (Winterbone & Winterbottom in appearance) and not the normal stag or some type of antler.

This caused great confusion for me when I first started getting into knife collecting but others such as Queen and Case actually use real stag (2nd cut) not bone.

Just an opinion...
