No birds yesterday, but a very nice day afield with my buddy Roger and his setters (Molly & Pete). The weather was perfect, overcast, cool, light breeze, in the low 40's in the Sandhills south of Southern Pines. OH

Temps hit """80"" today for the first time this year !!!!!!__water temp was 57 degrees**__my fishing partner had to ""Baby-Sit"" with his great grand-son ____ sorry partner,but I had to go fishing alone (talked to myself,all day long !!!!! ________ only had three bites, 7 1/2 lbs.---2 1/2 lbs.---and a 1 lb'er !!!!!! ____going again Thursday !!! (with my partner !!!!! )___________some pictures of todays catch ,taken by my wife,as I released the three back into the lake,to fight again !!!!

Went to Lake Greenwood this morning___temp was 33* when we started around 7:40am, with a ""cold breeze""___ ended up with fourteen (14) for the day__ best 5 weighed just over 20 lbs---achored by, a 7 lb'er and 5 1/2 lb'er !!!_____ the wind was like ""ICE"" all day @ 10-12 mph. maybe got to 50 degrees ??? ---but when you're catching a few,it ain't so bad !!!!! ____pictures are ""crummmy""__only had the phones,as I furrrgott, the camera again

Hog hunted near Callahan FL this past Monday - weather couldn't have been worse - poured rain, then early morning (2:00 am) got run out of the stand by a lot of lightning. My buddy Bubba shot a small sow, another partner missed a decent size hog, and I never saw one. View from my stand, the lodge, Bubba with his hog. In spite of the weather it was still fun - I'm ready to do it again! OH

Thanks guys - I LOVE to go hunting (spring turkey season opens in two weeks in NC & SC).

Joe, I used a .270 WIN M77 Ruger loaded with the 130 grain Speer Grand Slam bullet - these are in the discontinued Speer NITREX factory load - clock 3100 fps from my 22" barrel - that's smoking! I'd like to reload that same bullet for use when these factory loads run out. Bubba, the hunter who shot the sow - hit her with a Remington 35 Whelen factory load shot in a Thompson Center Pro Hunter rifle - said she rolled, ran 15 yards, and dropped dead on the road - just perfect to throw her in the truck! OH

Our tradition for sausage making has been right before Christmas and then during the local school districts spring break. Since retirement the schedule has gone out the window, but I did manage to try something new to us this past week, which was also spring break week .

We made venison summer sausage for the 1st time. Our sausage is usually 60% venison and 40% pork shoulder, stuffed in hog casing and smoked in a real smoke house. Well this week we thawed out 12 lbs of venison trim, one 7 lb boston butt and probably about 20 lbs of venison shoulder and neck meat for my wife's ground meat. This meat is for chili, pasta, taco soup, etc..The venison trim has too much "junk" in it to make anything but sausage . I bought a kit for the summer sausage for my 1st attempt. It worked very well. The kit called for 12 lbs of venison and 3 lbs of pork, so I cut off 3 lbs of pork and proceeded with the instructions, finished today around noon, tastes pretty good! Smoked it in an electric smoker.

Since we had 4 lbs of pork left, I took 6 lbs of Miss Joy's fancy meat and made 10 lbs of bulk sausage with our regular seasoning, the rest was ground and packaged for use in the chili, etc...When you look at the price of ground beef, ground venison is hard to beat!
