Was looking in a pawn shop this morning and found a little 3 bladed Western that looked neglected. I pointed out all the discrepancies to the shop keeper, he said "That's why it's so cheap ." The main clip blade had been tipped, there is a small crack in the mark side scale, the little spay blade was hitting the frame when closed, etc... Finally came to a deal and I spent a few hours cleaning and reprofiling the blade. There are still a lot of scratches on the blades where it was drug across a whet rock or a brick . Turned out pretty fair, the blade that was dragging on the frame apparently was full of dirt and straightened up, the clip was easy to reshape and all 3 blades open and close with a good strong snap . It is about 3 7/16" closed and has 658 on the back of the main blade. Will post a few more pics in the Western thread to see if any one has a date of mfg.

I found this camillus today at a antique store can anyone help is the handles bone ? Marked camillus on the tang and 27 on the back the screw driver is a liner lock and says center lock left on it thank u.main blade does have scratches and has been sharpened but still in great shape.

If you buy one of these mini microscopes it will help .I have one and use it all the time and it does not break the bank. You will see the pores in the bone.

I picked this one up this week-end. It's a hand full with great half stop and snap, 4" long. Bee Hive/Marples & Co./Sheffield. I'm in the process of doing some research on it. Goins says...1861 - 1908. cheers

Thanks guys, I really like this knife and actually have been corresponding with a few Marples family members in Sheffield about the knife...one of which is still making tools. It looks like Robert Marples carried the Bee Hive stamp. This is the response I got from the Marples family

"The beehive logo is the trade mark of Robert Marples & Co. as you can see from the middle photos on Marples tool makers page of my website. Robert was a distant cousin of Thomas Marples, the silver fruit knife maker".

And this is from a Marple's fellow who is currently a tool maker...
'Beehive' works is still in existance, along with the adjacent 'Taylor's Eye Witness' works, both on Milton Street, Sheffield. In fact, we use one of the last remaining 'Little Mesters' to do our grinding, and he is at Beehive Works. The factory, it seems, started in the 1860's ( a quick 'Google' will return the details). Few manufacturers in those days actually made all the constituent parts for their products, relying on the Little Mesters to do, in particular, blade making/grinding. I would guess that the blade was made by a seperate company at the Beehive works, with whichever Marples over stamping his name on the blade, and only attaching the scales & springs etc. himself.
