Straight and crooked razors...........
I posted some vintage shaving equipment over in the General O/T discussion forum but having some more stuff to post I decided to start a new thread here. We'll do the crooked stuff first.
First up is an old travel kit consisting of a razor;a shaving brush that is held inside it's handle for traveling;a bar of soap;an extra blade and some after shave talc.Note the name on the soap label and the room rates on the back!
Next up is something you don't see too often:a rotary blade razor powered by a windup clockspring motor! Not sure when this was made.
Next is an item that is a blade sharpener only. The blades are clamped to the end and the assembly is rolled across a whetstone back and forth;the rollers keeping the proper blade angle.
Last is an item that does essentially the same thing but in a much more unique way.The blade is mounted in the clamp and the small crank is turned on the top.The stropping wheel makes one complete turn and then the mechanism flips the blade 180 degrees so the other side can be stropped. It will continue to do this as long as you crank it.

Re: Straight and crooked razors...........
Some more stuff:
Another razor blade stropper by Ingersoll made for Gillette blades.
A huge unmarked razor;one of the biggest I've ever seen.
An unusual straight razor strop made by M.L.Brandt Cutlery.Kind of hard to describe how this works but basically the razor mounts through the side and there is a long strap with a buckle at each end.You pull one and one side of the blade lays against the strop. When you get to the end you start pulling the other end and the mechanism pushes the opposite side of the blade against the strop. The whole thing hangs from a hook.
Next are a couple of razors by George Baker. One has fancy file work on the spine of the blade and the nude is hand colored. The other is unpainted and plain spine.
Last is a kit consisting of a safety razor;a handle that is either used to strop the blades or act as a straight razor(the box has an emery board attached)and some extra blades. The blades as far as I know will only fit this razor.

The Warranted EXIMO has been reground. Was acceptable back in the day to get more life from an old razor. Both it and the DEAN are early 19th century razors. Most likely 1790 to 1825.
The rest except for the Twin-Works are all mid 19th Century.
The Mappin at the bottom, does it say "LANCET EDGE" on the side of the blade? If so, it has been re-shaped. I just got an ivory scaled Lancet Edge and will post some pics soon.
The Reynolds' scales are most likely cow horn dyed to look like tortoise. Don't know what process they used to dye that blond horn but it darn sure did a great job as it probably looks as good today as it did 150 years ago.
I would like to see some closer pics of the stamp on the tangs of the Dean and the Eximo if possible.
GREAT STUFF!!

Re: Straight and crooked razors...........
Here's mine. Just came in yesterday. Part of a 7 day set originally. Marked No VI on the spine.
Thought so. Those razors had a very unique grind. Here's what yours started life looking like. They had a unique blade shape as well.
Tang stamp on mine differs a bit from yours. Not sure which is the latter though.

Re: Straight and crooked razors...........
The one marked Frederick's is indeed dyed horn but the Frederick Renolds is real tortoise shell. If you look at it closely you can see the layers built up.Unfortunately it doesn't photograph well.Owd Wullie wrote:

OK, I see that it's pinned up like it's tortoise. Didn't notice that earlier.
They rarely used any washers on tortoise or ivory.
