An old knife's tale.............

This is a story of a knife I acquired in 1987.It isn't much to look at;in fact it is kind of crude by anybody's standards.To me it is one of the most valuable knives I own.

In order to fully understand the meaning,I must relate a little personal history.My parents were divorced before I was born and I was essentially raised by my grandparents as mother suffered some serious mental health issues due to the divorce.

Anyway to make a long story short I was to discover that after my mother had passed away in the summer of 1987 I discovered that my father was in fact still alive and living in Florida.I also discovered that I had at least one half brother and half sister.I say this because my father had been married at least 8 times;always managing to get married on his birthday(easy to remember his wedding anniversary?)so there may be other little Smiths running around out there that we haven't uncovered yet.

So I went to Florida to visit with my father(and siblings)and in the course of our catching up on the last 40 plus years I happened to mention that one of my hobbies was collecting knives. As I was getting ready to leave my dad presented me with the knife shown in the pictures.He had made it when he was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego California where their submarine was based.He was about 20 when he did it and it wasn't the greatest looking thing but it was scary sharp and served his needs.
Somehow it found it's way home with him and had been in his possession ever since.
He passed away in 1995 at the age of 91 and together with a picture of him and the crew of the submarine are my two most cherished memories of him.
