Mother of Pearl handle

Hi all.

I hope some can help me. I am getting a folder made for me. It will be used when I go hunting and fishing. Fot the handle I like to have mother of pearl. Is it a good material?

Can it also be scrimshaw on mother of pearl?

First who is making this for you?
He should fit the knife to the customer. He should be the one to ask.
You must of had a reason you wanted him to build it for you...

Mother of Pearl is a very nice looking handle.... .
But if you drop the knife on the hard floor it can break like glass.
Most pearl handles are glued not pined. Ask you maker how he plans to hold the handle to the knife liners ?
Here is one I have but it is fake pearl.
This would hold up to you using much more durable for a user.
I do not know any people that have a pearl knife for a user.
But I am sure some one will show us his pearl user here...
I love to look at them and not want to hurt them. Just for show.
I can not remember seeing any used pearls knives on E bay.

Hi and to the site.

Yes you can have MOP scrimshawed and potentially it will look great. However, it is not the most durable handle material. It cracks relatively easily when dropped for example. For heavy duty use wood, bone or stag would be better choices IMO. You could have some white bone scrimshawed. Just my 2p. Let us know what you decide and show pics of the knife when you have it. s-k

Hey Vegard,

s-k had some good advice, about smooth white bone, and scrimshaw, etc. You (a scrimshander) can scrimshaw just about anything that's smooth. One guy scrimm'ed my Bic lighter for me, years ago.

Another thing to consider about pearl for a hunter/fisher - when it gets wet (water or blood), it gets a slick as snot on your coat sleeve. It WILL be hard to hold onto, guaranteed.

If you've got oodles of money, go with pre-embargo ivory. When it gets wet with blood, it gets sticky. That's why the ancient soldiers prized it so much, for fighting cutlery.

Let us see it, when you get it.

This knife would be several housepayments, I believe.

I agree with the folks so far, that MOP is beautiful, but not durable or practical for a hunting and fishing knife. JMO.

Pearl that has been jigged (Shefield jig that Queen does) is a bit better to hang on to but even that can be slippery when wet or dressing game. I personally don't like bone for scrimshaw, I had one scrimshaw just dissapear from pocket wear.

I like jigged bone, wood or micarta that has been checkered best for hunting. Some materials just get to slippery when dressing game or when wet.

Sure Bill, like we could afford a Ron Lake-Martin Butler knife, looks like 24k gold on that too.

Thanks for your reply. Well, first I do not have a knife maker yet, have to find me one. You know a good one in Europe?

I understand what you mean....better to go for a bone/ivory handle in a working knife.

ivory is a very beautiful material but very sensitive to the external conditions : water, blood, and so on. I'm not thinking it's a good idea

Forensic Jim; She is a C. Platts Son Taper Blue Ice Cell Handle.
I think thats some kind of Case. I saw it and won it on E bay.
Only $26.00 but she looks super in my hand.

Sure El Lobo would be the one to point out he uses a Mother of Pearl knife as a user...

If you (Vegard_dino) check out some FISHING knives the ones with a sure grip work well.

It is a DeltaZ...

They have been out of business for awhile. It is about 3 1/2" closed.....
They were made by FOX, in Italy, who still makes a very nice knife.

Maybe our poster could contact FOX.

This was my first knife I bought with my dad's inheritance check.($200.00)
I wanted to give my two son's some thing more than just money when I died
That's what started me in this Knife Collecting. But I can't STOP...
I paid $80.00 for her and she has some kind of hook at the tip.
The top of the knife is sharpened too.
She was made by Donald Canney of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Justold, Thanks for the info on that incredible looking knife. I apoligize for not asking the price in a pm, but I got so caught up in the looks of that knife I went and posted it. I've seen a lot of fillet knives having been fishing for walleye's and salmon, but I have never seen one like that, and with the tip that it has. That knife is worth every bit of what you paid for it. Is the blade very flexible, or is it stiff? The handles really set it off.
