An old Wostenholm ,that although a little rusty,I believe unused. Pick bone handles with the older style spey.

Also a pressed stag JA Henckels with a chip out.(anybody with a piece of pressed stag that matches for repair?)Pretty full pruner blade.

A comparison of the pivot pins.I wonder if the stag was older or ?I don't know if the German cutlers used NS early and changed to steel,NS is called German silver in old catalogs?

Wow Lyle, these are all fantastic knives. Also, great information on Fibestos, I had never heard of it. That Cat would have been a real nice snag, it has great looking bone on it. The Holley Nurserymen's knife is beautiful, what great form it has and boy does it look good with nickel silver and ebony.

This one is a 4 line Camillus "Sword Brand" with hammered pins.You can see under certain light the remains of "Sword Brand " etch on the pruner blade.You can make out a little in the last comparison picture,it's the blade on top.

Very similar to the "Cutsure" near the top of the page,as shown.Let me add this Dimitri.I know where another Cutsure is (I haven't seen it yet..),and the owner says his was made by Challenge??

I would sure like to see a picture of a catalog cut of this "Sword Brand " rooster comb if anyone has one,especially the etch.

Here is a comparison with an Empire. I know Schrade supplied these to Shapleigh in later years.2 DEs and Empire,then with a Schrade.I believe they are Empire and whoever Empire's Farmer jack cutler was went to Schrade.The knife on the left is Schrade,about the only differences are the small bolster on the Schrade is a little smaller and rounder.I'm sure you would notice the differences in hand,considering your expertise.

The rat tail on the Empires are a little wider and the shape of the pruners are different.Hard to tell the subtle differences in scans.I'm glad someone let me get that Empire to compare with. Thanks CC.

I think NYK,Walden,Empire and others used the same bone supplier I was told(from a very reliable source) ,and seems I remember reading it somewhere.

AF Shapleigh DE shown with Walden farmers jack.The Walden is 4" with smaller bolsters,while the DE is 4 1/8"(same size as Schrades) with longer bolsters,the large being more squared.

That is what's known as the Empire shield,it's great,isn't it.Got that one from Charlie C. Gino ,I too think the bar shields are the most elegant on this pattern.

I really don't know about favorites Gino,I like them all for different reasons,although the DE shielded one is NM.

In hand ,you can see real resemblance in the bone on those two.Look closely at the jigging on them,the ones on the far left and far right.You can see the difference in jigging and what we call pick bone by comparing them to the one in the middle also.

Nice scans and great collection Lyle. I have the same scanner. Still working on dialing it in. The previous Epson Perfection I had seemed easier to use and it lasted 10 years.

Great looking knives & scans Lyle!

Bernard Levine suggests using a manila envelop for a background when using a scanner.
The lighter color will reflect more light than the black background you used here.
Experimentation with other backgrounds might be good as a black knife might all but disappear with the black background.

Charlie Campagnia (upnorth) uses a piece of chamois leather.
I liked his results and used his method with good results, though now I need to get a couple new chamois cloths.
Dirt & oil from the knives will stain the chamois over time.

This scan was made using a chanois background.

Thanks Mike,Charlie and Dale. Dale I'm experimenting,I bought a folder of card material yesterday.

Anyways here's one you've seen with the new ,as of now, background.1st two are same background.Don't know where the colors on the blade are coming from?

I changed the mark side open in this post and removed the glare colors ,but have to view the shiny ones standing.Rotating stretches the proportions.

I found the sweet spot to scan along the edge. Thanks Charlie N.

Lyle, the refracted light is a scanner phenomenon. Not sure if there's anything to be done about it. Sometimes, it will break up into the entire light spectrum and lay a rainbow effect across the blades.

Hello Lyle, I don't know if it is my computer or some of the scans, but some are very dark. The last ones are
Good. I use a scanner also my pictures look good on my end, but on some other computer who knows.
