camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

I seen that pair of knives myself but three is enough to own for me--And it seems like for some reason the price keeps getting higher all the time??? Heard the price of MW is going up too ::suspense::
Far as getting them re-scaled I bet just a dark ebony would look killer on this style knife buffalo horn--those two Jerry got done are beauties don't know which I liked best--

Gary, you're right. The prices of 72s and 1047s do seem to be going up and I'm with you, I can't figure it out. Miracle Whip too. I just keep looking for the bargains. I like your suggestion for ebony or horn of some kind. I'd also like to see one in Sambar Stag.

And by the way, three is NEVER enough.

Edit: Can you believe there are actually people on this forum that could give a fig about the (Camillus) 72 pattern. What is this world coming to?

I have noticed the price of the #72 takes a huge leap on ebay every time Jerry gets a new customized #72.

I figured I better get this one before it is out of my financial reach!
The master blade is only about 1/32" short so I can live with that.

Looks good Dale. Blades seem to be clean and from the rise of the back spring, I'd guess the snap is pretty good. Can't really tell the main is short just by looking at it.

Strange thing about this knife is the person who owned it apparently used the secondary blades almost exclusively
There is so much snap to the clip blade that it almost jumps out of my hand.
The secondarys snap are about 1/3 of the clip blade snap and the secondarys aren't bad; it is just that this knife has the strongest snap of a #72 clip blade I can remembering seeing! ::super_happy::

The secondary blades on these knives do tend to have slightly less snap than the main (if the main tang is not worn down) because the spring for the secondary blades is slightly less robust than the spring for the main.

Or a "poultice"!

What kind of poultice would a feller use to take away a knife itch? Whatever it is I think I'll stay away from it!

Not bad Grant!! ::tu:: Is this your first one?
You can bring the bone down some at the bolsters with a file (but don’t his the bolster with the file) and then use strips of sandpaper moving it back and forth on the bone to bring it down flush with the bolster if you want a more finished look.
But if you look at many of the old Barlows, they were not close to being flush with the bolsters. It all depends on how you want to finish it off. A lot depends on the tools you have available.

I like the rustic look you have with this one! ::nod::

Thanks tjmurphy and Dale .This is my third knife and I hope to get better. The bone comes from the farm and I have to jigger or make patterns in the bone with a small drill. At the moment I am using bone from a cow. ( I now have a three legged cow running around :) ) ( a aussie farmer's joke ).
I am now in the second or third stage of knife collecting looking for knife to repair and trying to repair them.I find it a good hobby as it takes my mind of the worries of farming.

Thanks for the heads up Josh but it's not a 72. It's a small serpentine "Midget Stock Knife", probably about 2¾" - 3" or so closed. Maybe equivelant to a Camillus 77 (I couldn't find the equivelant Camco number). I almost jumped on it but managed to put on the brakes in time. I shot from the hip one time, looking at blades and not reading and ended up with a little #70, really, really small.
