Some beautiful knives in this thread.

Some makers used rough black composition for whatever reason, some used
it by default during WWII because bone scale material wasn't readily available.

Whatever their reasons, they produced some beautiful knives.

There are a myriad of jigging patterns, although I've been told by a very
knowlegible knife historian that the handles were most often hot mold pressed.

Here are some Robeson examples.

The material on the three and four blade lobsters is black composition,
but it's the best looking imitation stag I've ever seen. Most likely the same
material used by Landers, Frary and Clark on their Universal knives.

found another one, a little better shape, a LF&C, 30% main blade loss?
one side is rough black composite, the shield, or mark side
the other side, the pile side looks like smooth wood, only one brass pin on that side
I think the owner etched his name in the shield, maybe he rehandled it,is that a word?

Hard to be certain by just looking at the photo Shearer, but I'd guess those knives might well be black delrin rather than rough black.

Several of the knives I cut up for testing had (the remains of) rough black handles. On a hunch, I had some tests done. One cover fragment was cell. The others consisted of latex and sulfur; one also had some carbon black. Latex and sulpher are the basic recipe for one of the early hard rubbers, variously called "ebonite" or "vulcanite."

That doesn't tell us how common hard rubber was as a cover material, but it was apparently one of the materials used.

I remember Ray (Paladin) told me one time-- he thought some of the ""black"" scaled knife handles,were made of the same material as the ""first sun-glasses frame material""---maybe the ebonite or vulcanite materials ?????

any idea when they moved from Newark to Maplewood?
this knife was probably made in Maplewood NJ after 1965
