Jerry;No Swan hunts in Maine,our Pheasant are raise and released by our rod and gun club$18.00 tag. Woodcock(timberdoodle) and Partridge(grouse) with all turkeys thrown in for fun.We hunt em Oct,Nov and Dec..

Sounds like a nice club! 18 bucks per bird? I guess if it keeps the club going and of course the expense to raise them, it's all good.

Look forward to seeing them Joe and thanks for sharing those beautiful pics. Looks like a serene place for sure. I have some old rods I will have to pull out that were my Dad's. Some 40 year old (give or take) Eagle Claws and a nice Fenwick Bass rod.

Switching gears here...

If anyone feel so inclined, look up Chukar hunting in Nevada on the web. This is not flatland hunting. Park the Jeep or UTV and hike about 2000 to 3000 or more feet up and there they are. When the winter comes the snow does push them down abit making it easier but not by much. These birds run real fast and fly pretty fast too. Imagine hiking up a 45 degree slope of loose rock for a few thousand feet, standing on loose rock and trying to swing on a flushing bird behind you that will reach 40 plus MPH quickly. That is Chukar hunting. You can get them down low once in awhile if the upper elevations they are at are short of water though. Good luck finding one after it is down without a dog, some bright markings or not. Not only due to have to make a quick decision on shooting, also where you are. I have shot 1 or two coming up on what appeared to be a ridge only to find they dropped down a 200 foot cliff that I was coming up on and did not know it. Dogs can get hurt quick so you have to watch them close. Look at the 4th pic with the dog in it (not mine), that is the usual place you find them.

Hopefully using these (pictured) tomorrow and the dog of course. Grandson's birthday and opening day for upland bird season is tomorrow. It has been unseasonably cold this year for September and October. It has been in the 50s to low 70s for the high and the 20s to 30s at night. No problem getting too hot bird hunting at the moment.

Browning Gold Hunter, my all bird "if it flys" gun for all open season species. CASE 1995' 3247 with Bird Hook. Probably only use the bird hook for duck since I normally just grab a Chukar by the back with one hand and grip/rip the breast out with the other. Hope to hit some Chukar tomorrow but will have to see if I can even make it out.

Wanted to post pictures but not successful.
I wanted to show a town plaque indicating that the first landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620 was what is now Provincetown, Massachusetts. Not Plymouth Rock, Which is about as big as a large Holstein.
And some bird life.
No fish ..........

on another note, went for a quick 5 hour ride and hunt today on the UTV before I had to be back for the Grandson's Birthday party. Using a decent cell camera that I actually use to take my knife pics, but the hieght of the mountains and steepness of the terrain is just not reflected in the pics. More steep and higher than the pic portray.

Anyway, here are some pics of my day, my hunting dog buddy Nikki and the beautiful nothern Nevada mountains. Some serious terrain and some beautiful views. Did not see one Chukar but got some GOOD exercise. No water in the creek below so I did not expect much but you never know.

Probably a 2000 foot high ascent best I could tell, straight up. We crossed over to the right at the top of the mountain to cover more ground and hopefully flush some birds and went down in elevation a bit. At the risk of sounding dramatic, got real ugly after that. Loose shale on a 45 degree side slope "side hill" walking down hill at a 45 degree slope or the weed covered dry creek bed where it is still real steep and who knows how solid the footing is when you step in. The dog is tough but was real concerned she would slip on the loose rock. Took a full hour on the decent. Could not afford to snap a pic as my dog the the priority. I scout using Google Earth, great application but that only goes so far. Hard to tell grade and footing.

Check out the 4th pic and enlarge it. I put a red arrow to show the UTV from about 3/4 ways up the mountain.

Had a great time and some good exercise. Sure we will both be sore tomorrow.

Great pictures indeed Jerry! Amazing country you live in there, awe inspiring stuff. I certainly don't have anything on that scale to share, but here's my outdoor adventure for the day...

I went out for a late morning hike today, didn't bring my bow along because I figured it was past prime hours, and I was more intending to stretch my legs a bit and check out some colors etc....of course I ran into two bucks that had just emerged from a creekbed and had no idea I was there! Managed to stealthily get my camera out in time to spap this pic of the smaller one standing 20 yards away, broadside, looking the opposite direction....just waiting for me to launch an arrow deep into it's vitals! Alas...all I had was my camera and some knives. Oh well, still pretty cool though. That deer in the pic just got done shaking himself off like a wet dog, water spraying all over reflecting in the sun!

This is a great time of the year! Love to see and read the hunting posts! Rifle season in our zone of Florida doesn't start till Thanksgiving Day but archery season in the south part of the state started around the 1st of August but we will still be hunting in west Florida towards the end of February. Florida's seasons are based on the rut which is very unusual compared to most other states.

All that to say, the other evening Ms. Joy and I were riding around the farm and we were going through a thickly wooded area, when I spotted a tiny fawn lying about 25' from the trail we were on. Our dog ran right passed the spotted fawn and we just watched for a moment and went back to the house. It was getting late but I decided to try and get a picture of the little critter. Drove back to the spot and sure enough it was still there, got 4 pictures, even used the flash but they didn't turn out as well as hoped for. Click on the pic and you can see the little dude in the middle of the brighter picture. The other with the flash show its' eyes.

GD, glad to see you making use of that roadkill. My son took out 3 does with his work semi last year. He was complaining he did not have any venison in his freezer prior to that but didn't think to throw one in the back of the refrigerated truck. Go figure. I'm sure the coyotes and crow were happy though.
