Should I or shouldn't I ?????????

Post by knife7knut »

Went to another antique shop today that I rarely frequent because of their high(ridiculous at times)prices and unwillingness to "negotiate". They had in the front display case what appeared to be a single blade switch(Presto) with advertising on one scale(celluloid)that had a pretty full blade and a $65 price tag.Upon closer examination it appears as though it was originally a letter opener(missing) although it looks to be a reasonably easy repair if one could find a suitable blade to modify.
My question is:Should I buy it?
Switchblade letter openers are not that common;I own one of them(a Geo.Schrade w/advertising dating it to 1940)and I see Flylocks on e-Bay every now and then.
Input invited.

Does it work, Ray? That's a good price even without negotiating if it's a good solid, tight one!
Like you said ~ there HARD to find. And with you already having one it
should be all that easier to duplicate the letter opener. ::nod::

Actually it works rather well;the blade doesn't sit proud and the lock functions perfectly.I guess I know where I'm headed tomorrow.

It only took one person to talk you in to it? You knew you wanted it before Joe ever stroked the first key. You're weak Ray. Very weak.

Well Jerry the reason I hesitated is there is a really nice wooden machinists' tool box in another antique shop and I can't afford both of them this week.I am trying to get more wooden machinists' boxes to replace the metal Kennedy boxes I have now.I like the wooden ones better and it is easier to control the moisture in a wooden box.

update: Went to the antique shop today to see if they would bend on the price of the knife.Result: got it for $50 including tax. So without further drama, here it is next to the Schrade I already own.As an aside;I got the Schrade on e-Bay for $15 including shipping! That is why I used to peruse the letter opener section.
