Rock,
First off welcome!
We really need a pic or several pics posted. Pretty easy to do, if you need guidance someone will help. Very least a cell phone pic or scanned on a copy machine into .jpg format only.
Sounds like a TESTED era knife. Not sure the bolsters would be steel. Iron was used but in pre 1920' as I recall. Probably nickel silver.
Is it a 2 bladed jack knife (both blades on same end) or a pen knife (one blade on either end)?
Still need the pics either way to confirm what you have for certain.
Jerry

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
Looks like a CASE 6299-1/2 to me. Appreciate the pics but the angles and clarity are difficult to tell. Confident if it is indeed 4-1/8 inches long closed, that is what it is. Few other knife that length but not like that frame. I doubt the small blade was originally a spey blade. Can't see the blade tip in the pics. Should be a pen unless someone sharpened or reprofiled to look like a spey blade. To my knowledge, no expert though, only secondary blade offered was a pen blade.
Knife was known as a Jumbo Torpedo Jack or "RailSplitter"
Can't see the shield or stamp to date the knife though. From what you described, probaly TESTED era, circa roughly (as that is up for debate) 1920' to 1940'.
Get better pic of shield and tang stamp an we will be able to confirm.
Pic 1 to match frame and blades. Here is a CASE XX 5299-1/2 to match it against to verify pattern. I think this is the same pattern you have.
Pic 2 to see if this stamp is similar to yours.
Pic 3 and 4 show spey blades as you can see at the tip.
Please share how you tested that the bolsters were iron.
Regards, Jerry

I agree on the main blade. But pics just make any more info than I offered quite difficult, as you stated. No expert here either.peanut740 wrote:The master blade doesn`t set right.Pictures are too bad to tell a whole lot,but I`m no expert on Case knives.

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
Maybe lay a ruler along the bottom of the knife too as you snap the picture. Most models can be identified by their frame length. Which of the tang stamps shown did yours look like?

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
Yes as others have said its a 6299 1/2. Looks like the backspring pin is missing. That would be a simple repair, that would be a nice knife to have repaired and cleaned up.

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
There appears to be a vertical line on the backspring in the third picture. Is the backspring broken? If so, I may have the correct part to replace it and as Steve said, it would be a simple repair.

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
No offense intended Rock but your questions have already been answered. One reply was from a CASE expert. which is not me. Not sure what else you are looking for. Knife was identified and dated. Look back at the replies and piece them together.rockmyworld wrote:hi,, I have posted more pics , I hope someone can help TO ID THIS KNIFE ,, a widow lady gave me some knives in a box and this is one of them she is from the new England , so her husband owned the knife for some 60 yrs , help!!!!!
TESTED era 6299-1/2!!!! 1920'-1940'. If you are looking for a firmer date within that time frame, not going to happen. Just how it goes!

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
I would think the iron bolsters might place it early in the 1920-40 era. I know Case used parts until they ran out of a that certain part, but the iron bolsters weren't standard during all of the Tested Era were they? Other than that bit of speculation, Jerry has it nailed in that the time frame for that tang stamp places it in the 20's to 1940 range as to when it was made. The system is just that simple. Case's own web site shows the tang stamp dating system quite well on this page: http://www.wrcase.com/case_college/ . The links on the right will get you through.
If you want to know about it's value, try using ebay's search of completed auctions for the same knife of it's age. Just remember, condition is everything. Unfortunately, ebay has become today's marketplace. That's where things are sold, so it makes sense to turn there in finding out what the market will bare.
Have we helped yet?

Re: case knife with steel bolsters
Iron bolsters on some Case jack patterns are common but on the 99 pattern it is rare to see iron. Bob may be right could be an early one or IMO more likely a later one WWII era when certain materials were scarce. Remember the Tested stamp was used at least through WWII.
