improvement or not?

hey everyone,

i was at my father in laws house tonight and made an interesting knife trade. i traded a case xx 2003 amber bone baby butterbean for a robert klass kissing krane stag canoe 2506 with the kissing kranes tang stamp on both blades and the red kissing krane emblem on the handle. both knives are in near mint to mint condition.
now i have never owned a kissing krane knife before, but he seemed to really like the butter bean and i do like the kissing krane, so i made the trade.
anyway, i thought i would do a fun post here and get some other collectors opinions as to what the value of the knife i have now is and any opinions as to if i bettered my collection or not. anyway, i am posting a pic of the knife i got, so feel free to leave any opinions. looking forward to hearing from you.

Since you asked...

Case is an eminently more collectable knife than Kissing Crane. I doubt the K/C will ever rise in value.
That said, I would much rather have a knife I wanted, regardless of collectability.

JMO, however.

i appreciate your opinion. i completely agree with you on the collectability of case. thats what my collection consists of mostly, is older case knives, other than a couple of bokers. i wasnt and still am not sure of the value of the knife i have now but i did assume that the kissing crane wouldnt gain anything in value like a case, as you said.

anyway, thanks for the response, thats exactly what i was looking for, is opinions from other collectors out there, so thanks again and hope to hear from alot more of you.

Value / investment concerns aside, I would have to say I like the Kissing Krane better. Solingen Steel over the Case Stainless for me anyday.

I dont think of the price I paid that much. I decide at the moment if I want to pay that for it and let_er_fly. This is a "Hobby" to me and therefore even tho I do keep records of what I pay for knives, when Im asked what I paid, I really dont remember. I just say about waht it worth probably to those interested and go on just enjoying the knife while its with me.

Steve, I would have swapped if I had that chance. The Kissing Krane is a much better looking knife IMO... I think the stag really puts it over the top.

thanks guys,

im really enjoying reading everyones thoughts and opinions. as i said, i have never owned a kissing crane before and am not saying that im going to be collecting anymore but the canoe patterns, i would have to say are probably my most favorite pattern in any maker so i thought it would make an interesting piece for my collection in contrast to the cases i have. i would idealy like to have a case stag canoe (older one) and a hen and rooster, and boker.....all stag canoes. i did have a newer case, boker and hen and rooster, but sold them regrettably. i cant afford to collect all the great patterns from all the makers and my first love in collecting does lie with case, but it would be interesting to have one of all of them and i think stag handles would be the best way to go with that part of my collection....at least from the other makers i mentioned that im really not too familiar with yet.

anyway, thanks everyone for the opinions and hope to hear alot more out there.

when i first made the trade, i did like the looks of the kissing crane, but i mostly made the trade because my father in law liked the case butterbean so much. as i said, i didnt and dont know what the value would be on this knife but i had gotten a great deal in the butterbean for only 20.00 and we swapped even, so i only have 20.00 in it. i got home and checked ebay and saw that one had recently auctioned for between 40-50.00, so i guess im in good shape, investment wise.

Nah... j/k I like the peanuts alot and have been focusing on that pattern type collection. This Fightn Rooster Canoe would look much better in a canoe collection. I'm not interested in selling it right now really, but a trade would work. Would you happen to have any case peanuts around?

hi hawke,

that sure is a great looking knife. i checked out your link to your knife collection page and you have alot of very nice knives. i really enjoyed looking at them. you had alot of peanuts with handles that i had never seen before, so that was a real treat.
right now i only have one peanut in my collection. its a 1 dot, 1979 smooth rose bone in mint condition. i think you already have one of those when i was looking at your collection. i had thought a while back about selling it but my daughter really loves it. she says its her favorite of all of the ones i have...lol.
i had a 1940-64 rough black handled peanut a while back, but my father in law bought that one from me. it was in good condition except the blades had been sharpened down some.

anyway, i dont think i could get rid of that little peanut right now, but if i come across one, i will be sure and let you know.

thanks hawke, heres a picture of it. she would get me if i got rid of it..lol. ill talk to my father in law about the rough black and see if he wants to get rid of it, but i doubt it, all hes interested in are the old case xx's 1940-64 and i got him a real good deal in it......you wouldnt believe me if i told you what i sold it for...lol, ill just say that i was awful good to him...lol.

I'd say you made a good trade.
The stag on your new acquisition looks really nice, and I'd jump on a Kissing Crane since I don't see many of them around.
If he really likes amber bone better than stag, well, who are we to call a fool by any other name?

Steve, I think you made a good deal. I also agree with Alexander...if BOTH party are happy then it was a good deal. I ALWAYS ask the person I'm trading with "are YOU happy" and I never part without a handshake. LAter wt3l

thanks again everyone! i am satisfied with the trade and my father in law really likes the butterbean, so all are happy....lol. the kissing crane is the only one i have of that brand and i dont see alot of them around, so im going to hang on to it. anyway, thanks everyone for joining in.
