Not an expert on Belknap knives (or any other for that matter) however, my understanding is that the Pine Knot brand was a second brand for Belknap Hardware. In consequence, the quality of the knives was somewhat lower than the quality of their first brand knives e.g. the India Steel Works knives. Most of the authentic knives that I have seen (if my memory doesn't fail me) were of a noticeably lower quality with most of them being celluloid handled and most of those beng an imitation black jigged material.

I did a search of eBay and could only find a couple that weren't counterfeits or reproductions in my opinion.

The knife that is the subject of this thread appears to be a three backspring whittler with genuine bone handles. It is one of a series of these knives that you frequently see brought up in the counterfeit section on this site with various tang stampings.

Actually I rather like the image with all the attributions on it. You may or may not have noticed, I normally try to give credit where credit is due for quotes or images I've used.

It's funny that this topic came up when it did because I ended up with a couple knives this weekend that were presented as Pine Knot's and were obvious to me that they weren't. I ended p with them because I bought all of the knives he had to sell plus the Samsonite make up case he had them in. He didn't like me saying that the two knives weren't Pine Knot's or at least original ones. I had to hold back from laughing when he said he wanted $30 each because I didn't want to offend him. I had my sites set on one jewel that was in the ole box. But anyway, These Pine Knot's were obviously made by Colonial and they certainly didn't go up in quality. You know how many knives they kicked out and you know one when you see one or have one in your hands. One is a white stockman about the size of the Anvil stockman we all know, the tang stamp on the primary says Pine Knot over Made in USA. The spey tang stamp says patent over 3,317,996 and nothing stamped on the sheepsfoot. Everything screamed Colonial but he was having none of it, His mind was set on it being a Pine Knot. Then I showed him the tell tale sign of it being made by Colonial. The cheesy chrome painted oval plastic inlay right there in the handle... I pointed and said see that and he said "oh, hmmm." It said Ranger.There was no bird pecking around a tree on the tang either. The other was the smaller serpentine stockman. This one said Pine Knot on the badge but the primary blade tang stamp said ULTRABLADE over USA... I have no idea what was going on with Pine Knot Brand Name or Colonial's involvement with marking some knives with that Brand. I have 2 of em for $30 a piece if any of you guys want a Pine Knot in your collection lolololololol

Patent # 3,317,996 must be kinda special, seeing how it is on several Colonial knives we've seen in the last year, 'course it must be very special to show up on a "Ranger Pine Knot". My serious response would be, "Are real Pine Knot knives scarce enough, and valuable enough to try and deceive folks by creating fakes?" Still learning and surprised on this end!

Boy I sure hope that this one isn't faking anyone out. And I have no idea as far as who owns the brand ar had in the past so it is possible that Colonial made some for whomever did and these were made from parts I'm getting rid of these as Colonials for cheap and the odds are whomever buys them will not now about Pine Knott's and not try to pass them along as real ones.... I hope... hmmm Should I stamp them as fake? These are just cheapies and not worth the effort really... I probably should have let the guy keep them
