New York knife Co. sheath knife?

I have not seen any NYK fixed blades before this, though I have no doubt they made some.

According to Bernard Levine ( http://www.knife-expert.com/stlessh.txt ) stainless steel was mainly used in kitchen cutlery and flatware after 1919, but the problems of non transitioning austenite was not solved until the early 1950s, by Emerson Case, the president of Robeson Cutlery Co. Until Mr. Case solved that problem, stainless steel had a bad reputation in cutlery that was used for its dependability as a cutting tool.

It seems unlikely to me, though by no means impossible, that NYK would make such a knife with what was widely known as inferior steel at that time. They went out of business just about 12 years after stainless steel had been developed to the point that it could be used in tableware. It seems improbable that a company with the reputation of NYK would make such a large knife used for cutting out of steel known for its inability to hold a good cutting edge.

For that reason alone I am skeptical of the authenticity of the knife.

On the other hand, I know NYK did make flatware, so it is possible that they had stainless steel and were familiar with it.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I about New York Knife Co. will post about this.

The seller did say he had added the handles, so that makes it even harder to figure out.
We know the stag is added; it would have been helpful if he had included some before pics of the knife.

I know this doesn't answer your question regarding the knife you're looking at, but I did run across the above Hammer Brand sheath, not sure if it is from the NYK era or the Imperial era though...the emroidery of the leather does look pretty old though.

I would assume that this is an Imperial Hammer, rather than a NYK Hammer. You didn't show the back of the tang, but I'm assuming it doesn't say "New York Knife" on it.

Although it's tough to tell by the stamp, it looks Imperial to me.

I didn't see that. But you are absolutely correct, that's a repro stamp with USA in the middle.

Well, That knife is not an old one for sure. I really did'nt think it was. Did New York knife Company ever make sheath knives? I have never seen one. That don't mean there isn't any. Does anyone have any old New York Knife Co.catalogs?

I have some pages but they show all pocket knives, no fixed blade knives.

I have noticed this with many old knife companies, you would think they should have made a hunting knife however none have turned up, in the case of NYK, they made plenty of kitchen knives, Remington Case, L.F.&C. to name a few of the big knife companies making knives at the same time NYK was, made hunting knives and lots of them.
