I'd have to say no, the main blade looks like it was made last week, it sure doesn't have the look of a carbon steel blade. I don't know if it holds true with other brands as well, but with vintage Remingtons, the long nail pull should run all the way back to the tang, not stop a 1/4" short. That blade tang doesn't even show any opening and closing marks, possibly indicating having been recently assembled.

That bone doesn't look right to me. And on the back side does it look like there is some gap filler where the balloon end bone/bolster come together?

Good eyes guys!
There sure does appear to be some kind of "filler" on the pile side...
...and, not only is the pull short of the tang, but it appears to run up into the cut swedge, and that looks strange to me as well.
I'll try not to mention the seller's track record...
Plenty odd enough to wait for another, IMO.

I'd have to agree with the above, looks like filler between bolster and scale on pile side, the pull running into the swedge looks suspicious and the blades look too nice.

I agree with the comments, however this is an interesting knife to me. I would be very interested in what PA knives has to say about this one. He may just be waiting to comment knowing the full story long ago. I have no knowledge whatsoever about this brand, just interested in learning more.

Boys,
I sit here with a tear in my eye
as I am so proud of each of you for your comments. You were all right on with them. I contacted the seller and I will post those interactions very soon as I want to see if he returns my last comments. I am not trying to be an idot to this seller, just wanted to educate him. "if indeed he wants to be educated" I hope you will all comment after reading the posts.
The fact is, this knife was made probably in the 1970's if not later and is a parts/remanufactered/rehandled what ever else you can think of knife. I story is told in the book and will disappoint many who have these knives as to the real history. Besides his dates are already off.
Penn Cutlery 1928 - 1932 actual production.
I look forward to your comments on my interaction with this seller.
David

Here is the letters start to "I guess you can say finish" as I haven't heard anymore since. You be the judge
My first e-mail to him via ebay message.
Sir,
Penn never made this knife with those handles. I continue to question knives that you have been selling as not being original. Can you clairfy? Putting together parts and having them professionally cleaned is not an original knife. As an avid collector and writer, I am concerned as to the novice collectors out there.
thank you for your time
His angry response,
I will guarantee this knife to be original and I feel I am as knowledgeable as you seem think you are. Jim Parker, who was a personal friend of mine, told me that this knife is correct, a bit before his death. Certainly I trust the judgment of an expert such as he was. I never stated that the knife had been cleaned, just that it is clean. Just what books have you written, if you care to identify yourself? Perhaps they are on the New York Times Best Seller List. Do you live on the computer, this knife was just listed and you seem to have me on some type of list as this has happened prior to this incident? Often people like you do this out of envy and jealously. I personally stand behind anything I sell and if there is a mistake made, it is an honest one and I will correct it. If you cannot come forth with your name, I ask that you quit writing and condemning me. Anonymity is not an admirable trait to possess when criticizing others. I consider your notes slanderous and I ask that you stop. If you wish to speak to me on the phone, feel free to call and I will happily discuss anything with you. If you continue to harass, I will report your messages to Ebay. If you think of yourself as the watchdog of cutlery on Ebay, perhaps you had better know what you are talking about. When did that job become available, if there is another opening, I may apply. I believe my credentials to equal or surpass yours. I have collected for 50+ years as a hobby and professionally. I welcome anything constructive, but not slander from someone to weak to leave his name.
And by the way, if you are an author, you need to brush up on your spelling, clarify is incorrectly spelled!
Jack

Penn knife
This seller is being disingenuous. I purchased two knives from him when I was just beginning to collect, both were represented as near mint or mint. Both were heavily cleaned. One, at least, had had the handles replaced. I no longer bid on his auctions.

Like I said before, I had purchased a knife from him before that was supposed to be a tidioute, you could see the grind marks on the pen blade and the heat signature from grinding. I sent this knife to David, as he wanted it for his counterfeit collection for his book. This knife came from Myrtlefaye, and when I questioned him on the authenticity of the knife, I got a reply back from his "wife" that he has fell ill and was in the hospital, and he would reply when he got back. Guess what, never heard from him again!
The guy stopped selling for a bit, now I see he is back at it, he always has a rare name, "mint" knife, and they always never measure up to what they are supposed to be.

I purchased 4 different knives, so-called Harness Jacks from myrtlefaye, all assemblies of junk!! Interestingly, he refunded all my money, and apologized! Then he waited a while, and sold them again to someone else! After I sent back the last two, he stopped using "punch" and "harness" in his titles because he got too many emails from me, questioning his "knives"!!

$104 for a knife that isn't the real thing. Well now, I must be in the wrong business. I never heard anymore from the angry knife man. someone has a knife that is really only worth maybe $50 if that. I am sure he thinks he has a real gem. Oh well, another one lost to poor education and no research.
