Just picked up a Robeson #622064 with a stamping not in my book - Could anyone possible date this for me:

Semi Circle Robeson
U.S.A.

I assume you are stating that's the stamp on the master blade.

If so, that's a bit unusual.

If it's only on a secondary, however, it means nothing as to dating.

I don't have my references in front of me and I do not suggest anyone trust my memory these days.

Tom Kalcevic in Knives Can Talk! dates the stamp on a master blade as 1917 - 1939.

Hi. Early when Robeson had just 50 employees they merchandiced directly to hardware stores and became known only by "word of mouth". You need to post a photo of the tang stamp to verify the age. I know of 12 different that they used. If you said it reads with a "USA" on the ricasso then it is made in Rochester, N.Y. between 1911 to 1921. These are the most desirable to collectors. The numbers "622064" tell #6) Handle Material- Bone, Rough Jigged Delrin or Plastic, #2) Number of Blades- Two, #2) Liner & Bolster Material- Brass, #064) Factory Pattern/Model Number 64. Without seeing a photo of your featured knife no way of being exactly sure. To speculate as to why you don't find this model in a book you have may be because the Handle Material # is different (not paired) with the Liner-Bolster Material # which means these don't go well with each other, so not many sold. Price generally "doubles" every ten years for Robeson brand. Hope this helps, post your photo!

Thanks Colonel - the model is in my book -Standard Knife Collectors Guide - Its the stamping thats not in it - my book only shows 6 of the 13 known stampings. I cannot get clear photos for this forum.

It seems to me there should be a Robeson site. A Cattaraugus site would be in order also.

So, my book lists 6 of the 13 stampings Robeson used. Is there a listing or chart somewhere that lists all of them in one place? It seems the Robeson's can be dated by there stamping, and whether they were made in Rochester or Perry or maybe elsewhere also.

Charlie, what are your thoughts on this? Colonel and others may have knowledge on this also.

Knives Can Talk is out of print and he does not plan any further revisions.

If you have a nice computer with at least a gig of random access memory, you might peruse the "HISTORY" section of http://www.RobesonsRme.com.

It's a photo heavy site, and not well constructed by its computer illiterate author.

Click on HISTORY and scroll down to TANG STAMPS. Every known stamp is listed with approximate dates, if known.

BTW; There were no manufacturing facilities in Rochester. Corporate offices, shipping and receiving, etc.

Earliest American made, non-imported Robeson knives were made by Sherwood & Bingham in Camillus, NY. The rest were made in Perry and/or Mount Morris, NY.

Robeson went out of business in 1965. Anything manufactured after that is not really a Robeson.
