What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Nice one Dale!
I've got one of those too, not in nearly as good condition as your though.
Great solid heavy duty work knife, made to spend quality time in the woods!
I never thought the name sounded quite right though, something more lumberjack-ish would have perhaps been more appropriate....

Dale, I know nothing about that knife. I belive it was only sold in Canadia.
Knee surgery! now I know about that. I had both Knees replaced at the same time.

Keith -- That letter opener is from 1943 to 1963 because "postal zones" were instituted in 1943 and went out in 1963 when zip codes were introduced. (The postal zone for San Diego was 40)

It's a very nice opener. I like it. Good catch.

My latest are opens stock 233 jack knife. 881 stockman and a 293 trapper. The blade are the same as OT but the jigged scales look much nicer. Until I happened to run across a picture of one, I didn't know they existed. I thought after the era of using bone was over it was sawcut delrin on OT's or Staglon on Uncle henry's and that was It.

I picked up this Old Rag at a 106 year old Hardware Store sell off. Local store for me, kinda sad to see it go. Stole this one for $30!!! #8944 on this one. Even had the original sleeve over the box. This one has the aluminum (?) insert in the sheath to prevent the laces from being cut. I know very little history on it. Any help from the Schrade Pros on dating this knife????

With the Schrade Walden stamp it is 1973 or before.
The 15OT appears in the catalogs first in 1964 and it shows the laced sheath like yours.
The sheath changed to the 5 rivet sheath in 1971 according to the pictures in the catalog.
Just a gut feeling on that, I think is is one of the earlier ones; If I had to give dates I would guesstimate 1964-1968.
If the catalog pics reflect the actual time they changed the sheaths, it would be no later than 1970.

It is always dangerous to say something definitive about Schrade, but '64-'68 would be my best guess. ::shrug::

I got a 'new' Schrade Walden off ebay. It was listed as a serpentine jack with wood handles. It was missing the shield and the seller did not bother to look hard enough to see the pattern number on the rear tang.

The blades looked decent so I threw a bid on it and watched to see what happened. It went to the end of the auction without another bid on the knife.
I got it for the opening bid of $9.99! ::ds::

When I got it in the mail I looked for a number, and there it was, #823!
Listed in the catalogs from 1954 to 1958, with propwood handles.
I glued another shield in the knife, (I just happened to have the correct shield), and it is a beauty! ::ds:: ::woot::

This was the seller's pic on ebay.

I will post a current picture when it stops raining here so I can get some good light for the pic.

Thanks guys.
I ran outside today between rain showers and snapped a quick pic of the 823.
There are a few rain drops on the knife as it started raining again during the lase few pics.
Schrade Walden 823 a.jpg
Schrade Walden 823 b.jpg
I haven't done anything yet to clean it up, just glued in a shield and buffed off the outside a bit.
There are the start of some light surface rust on the inside of the back springs. I need to remove that & treat it so it will not rust again.

Dale,

According to Levine, it was manufactured in 1975, even though Schrade left Walden in 1973 to move into Ellenville!

Steve Sanders has one listed in his AAPK Store with the box if you might be interested.

Actually, Schrade moved to Ellenville in 1958. Things are not always as they appear. And Schrade used that Walden tang stamp from time to time in their latter days as well. Not to mention the "stuff" being marketed now with post-2004 manufacture.
