This great hunting story, pictures of the young man and his first gobbler and the encouraging comments by forums members just rang my bell!
My grandsons, 7 and 8 year olds and their mother, spent a few days with us old folks earlier in the month. We only fished in the farm ponds , which are not known for big fish, but plenty of hand sizes bream and an occasional bass or cafish. Grandmother turned one of her planter boxes upside down to provide them some worms and there were plenty of frogs around the edges for them to catch and use for bait. They live in the Atlanta-metro area and the Florida panhandle runs at a lot slower pace. When they drove in from the big city, they weren't here more than 20 minutes and the boys were heading to the pond. I tell folks they "pulled the lips off all the fish in them ponds!" They fished for 3 days and wore me out! Even taught them how to clean their catch. Also had time to hook up the planters and let them help plant some of our garden. (previewing the pictures, I realized the dog was in the 3 pictures I posted-she loves any activity in or near the water)

I am still able to fish with my dad, great uncle and cousins. We went down to the coast this past weekend and I cherished every second of it. My great uncle is 92 and still able to go and fish all day

I never miss a chance to go and make those memories. Especially with Uncle Ray. He's a veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. I grew up near him and that man has taught me some invaluable life lessons on how to be a man. They just don't make 'em like Uncle Ray anymore.

Just learned today that I drew a cow Elk tag this year. We do the lottery system here in Nevada, even for residents. No rack to mount but the meat is great and ALOT of it. Looking forward to this fall and some pics to post and Elk meat on the table. Good stuff!

Keep posting those fish. Really beautiful. I am mainly a trout fisherman myself, although I dabble in the catch of the day.

Elk is the one large wild game I can get past my gag reflex. What I've eaten had a slight off taste to it but not bad enough to make me shove my plate away.

Thanks much JerryD! I personally find Elk to be the best tasting of the big game. Only big game the wife will eat. Maybe it was what the Elk's diet was, "you are what you eat" kind of thing. Corn fed deer tastes a hell of alot better than one that has been grazing on grass, in my opinion.
Like the difference between diving ducks that eat fish and crap off the lake or river bottom and mallards eating grain in the field. If I was hungry enough, I'd eat a diving duck, but they do taste fishy and are awful. They get spared a face full of shotgun pellets when I am duck hunting. I let those go flying by.

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be able to accompany my 10 year old son Samuel and his 4th grade class on a field trip to a "Buckskinner's Rendevouz"! Lots of hands on stuff for the kids to do, here's a few shots of Sam sawin' wood, goin' through rifle drill and marching training with a wooden musket, tossin' a tomahawk, and haulin' water old school style!
It was a great day for us and gave the kids some perspective on the skills needed to survive in frontier days...

Yessir Jerry, that's my boy wearing my old utility cover...hard to believe that thing used to fit on my melon! And yes, he has been telling everyone about it, I think it will be one of those memories that sticks with him, as he did some unique stuff...

At Reno airport, they have some pretty impressive taxidermy displays. Here is one supported and donated by Nevada Bighorn Unlimited (NBU). Nevada is one of the few states where one can hunt 3 different species of Bighorn. California Bighorn, Desert (Nelson) Bighorn and the Rocky Mountain Bighorn (from left to right in the pic).

NBU has help bring back these fine animals from being almost wiped out in this state. They build guzzlers out in the desert, monitor habitat and the animals themselves, etc. I buy a bonus point each year for all three Bighorn and Mountaion Goat for 10 bucks for each to get more chance in the draw lottery. This is a once in a lifetime darw. I know a guy that has put in for 30 years straight and has bonus points up the yang and nothing. I think for the Rocky Mountain Bighorn, they may have like 6 tags total for the entire state. Well, maybe someday...
