Oh man, this is great! I've never seen curly birch before, and the olive wood and black palm are really nice. I just had to shoot some pics of my (mostly) Case trappers to share.
The group shot has a Schrade Oak on top with, left to right below all Case- oak, birdseye maple, walnut, red box elder, ebony swirl and teak. The Yellow Rose is Bois D'Arc, and the Schrade lock-back is Goncalo Alvez contained in an all walnut box!

It is "quarter sawed" I do believe. That gives it that great profile.

I'm not familar with the term "quarter-sawed", knifetime. Could you explain further? A few years ago my uncle brought back a chunk of ebony from his travels. It was a rough wedge about palm-sized, a chip from a carving a local craftsman was making. One end was the 'normal' dark color, but the other end was white or cream colored. I thought the dark was outer wood and the light part inner wood but may have been wrong. It was very curious.

This explains quartersawn lumber pretty well. I build alot of cabinets from quartersawn oak. It is widely used in arts and crafts style furniture and cabinets.

Back on topic. I don't have much in the way of wood handled knives.

There's an Italian Automatic with Olive wood handles.

And a GEC #15 Boys Knife with Ebony handles.

I don't know what the wood is on this Laguole Rossignol. (Laminated maybe? )

No idea what the wood is on this Okapi either.

I understand y'all are talking about folders but I just couldn't resist throwing in this Blackjack Chestnut Chukker.

Jerry, Lookin' at the way the cuts are made on that "visual", I wouldn't go for the "rift sawn" because of the amount of slabs or waste it would produce. Don't have much experience with sawmilling, but I suppose the fancy grain that result from these cuts has its' place in things like fancy cabinets, flooring and knife handles! Maybe the guys that posted about the portable saw mills a year or so ago can explain how all this works. All we've ever had sawn, the man just loaded the log on the mill and squared it by cutting slabs off 4 sides then sawing boards based on width and thickness desired, barn lumber is quite a bit different than fancy wood for a knife handle. Interesting topic and some fine looking' knives you juat added! . Treefarmer

And yet (IIRC) rift sawn is less expensive than quarter sawn. (MB -- please correct me if I have that backwards in my brain cage too. )

Lots of great knives and LOTS of great information. It's all on topic from my point of view. After all, it's all about wood.

Jerry, visually turn the rift and quartersawn logs in your illustrations, 1/8 of a turn. Now orient those with the plain sawn log. You'll see that certain boards taken from the plain sawn log will have the same grain orientation as both the rift and quartersawn log. Now days they simply plain saw all logs and sort the rift and quartersawn boards from the pile. They do charge a premium for both rift and quartersawn lumber. (IIRC quartersawn is slightly higher then the rift sawn) They base the extra cost on someone manually sorting the boards, even though there is no extra cost involved in the actual milling process. All species of logs can be sawn and sorted in this manner. Rift sawn is very plain in most cases and quartersawn almost always reveals a special grain pattern.

And there isn't as much call for rift and quarter sawn lumber as there is for plain sawn so it all works out. Those clever devils.

It's been a while since I've bought any lumber. Thanks for verifying my memory hasn't completely abandoned me.

I used to get my lumber from an old Korean War vet just south of town. His "lumber yard" was in the hay mow of his barn (his saw mill and kiln were just down the road a mile or two) and he had made an elevator using a grain elevator auger motor to power it.

The old fella was Air Force and had served part of his hitch in Alaska where he fell for a native gal so when the war was over, he went back to Alaska and got her. By that time she had graduated high school and was "legal"

Some years ago, she decided she wanted some buffalo so he got her three or four buffalo. Now they have a small herd and sell buffalo meat when they have it.

The old fella couldn't hear it thunder but I liked to go out there because his lumber was cheap, cheap, cheap and good quality. I bought a DeWalt 12" bench top plane so I could dimension it myself and that worked out great for me because I loved to make sawdust.
