Norvell-Shapleigh Rehandle

Post by whitebuffalo58 »

Pretty happy with the way this one turned out, it was in rough shape when I got it. It looked to have been used and abused for a number of years without handle slabs. The liners were warped and distorted, blades had been poorly sharpened and mishaped. The pen (or coping?) blade was ground to a tanto point and the punch was broke off. But there was still plenty of blade to work with and all blades still had great snap.
I started to replace the punch blade, I had one that would've worked well enough. But, since this was the only punch blade that i've seen with a half-stop and it was tang stamped Norvell-Shapleigh, I decided to go ahead and reprofile it and leave all the original blades in. The main spear blade wasn't too bad, but I did reprofile the secondary to a more suitable shape.
I had to do quite a bit of straightening and flattening on the liners before I could fit up some new slabs. The handles are Culpepper Amber Bone Stag and I inlayed the original sheild back in.
With everything this knife had going against it, I was kinda surprised I got it to turn out as well as it did. But, Norvell-Shapleighs in my opinion, are always worth restoring if at all possible. Sorry I didn't get any before pics, those always seem to slip my mind. ::facepalm::

I love that amber bone stag. It's about the nicest out there.

That's a great save. That knife still has plenty of life left in it. Great job as usual!
