That pattern of knife is commonly known as a melon tester. It was designed to cut a small plug out of a melon so that one could determine the condition of the inner fruit. Supposedly, if the melon was not yet ripe the plug could be reinserted so as to not ruin the melon.
The handle on the knife appears to be some sort of plastic substance. The "Heller Bros." logo appears to me to be molded into the handle.
In your topic line you mention this knife as being a Schrade. I did a google search for Heller Bros. and found they were originally a file manufacturer, but also later made some other hand tools such as wrenches. The only knives I found mentioned that tied in with the company were horse hoof knives.
I do not know this as fact, but I would assume the knife was made under contract by Schrade as an advertisement item, given that it bears the Heller Bros. logo. As far as value is concerned, your guess is as good as mine.
Can you show us a picture or two of the knife with its blades open please ?

Rick thanks for pointing out that link you had posted. I had my head all the way up my......well never mind. A citrus fruit company with advertising on a melon tester knife makes more sense than the blind alley I was taking us down.

HarrO if you were planning on retiring on the proceeds from that knife, maybe you'd better hold off giving notice at work a while longer. Still it's an interesting and somewhat unusual knife. Thanks for posting the additional photos.

He was a immigrant from the "Golden-Belt" in Central Bohemia that is known for the fertile soil there. Had several marriages between first cousins and all his clan were tenants "serfs" on large (500 acre) farms. This was before abolition of serfdom or bondage. The relationship between "leasee" and "Herr" leaser is represented by an overbearing manager and strained/lopsided. His competetor in file making business (Simonds). say he died in 1912 but he then would be 106 at death. His three son-in-laws were the "Bros." in Heller Bros.on Hamilton Street/Mt. Prospect Street in Newark (George, Peter, and Lewis). Mmm... my Grandma had cantaloupe at dinner every night. Hope this helps you on your way!

The knife has the logo of the Heller Bros. Citrus Company in Florida. I doubt they have any relation with Elias Heller.

i picked up one of the earlier brothers of this knife in the 80s. lady was 60 & said it had been her fathers, white celluloid handle with lines to simulate ivory & of course schrades good carbon steel. i've heard newer knife users decry that carbon steel rusts away just laying there---well this baby would shave hair after all those years in a dresser drawer.--HiPower
