What is your favorite 3-4" blade, assisted opening knif

Just checking.
I have had several assisted opening knives. My current EDC is the Kershaw Whirlwind. Also looking at others such as the CRKT Voodo.

Hello Patriot,

For me, it would be the Benchmade 670 apparition. Only because I'm a big Benchmade fan, and that's about all Benchmade has in the assisted opening arena... I do like the design and function of the Kershaw knives a lot, but I wish they would use better materials like 154CM, ATS-34, or 440C (with good heat treatment of course). That would shoot them right up there as one of my favorites. I guess the Kershaw Boa has CPM S60V steel that (when treated properly) makes a real tough, hard blade that will hold an edge forever (hard to sharpen too though). That would probably be my second choice.

When you mentioned sharpening, that make me think of something else I'd like to get other people's idea on. Have you tried the Spyderco Sharp Maker rod system?

I've got exactly one assisted opening knife, a Kershaw Scallion. It was pretty much my exclusive EDC for a couple years before I really got bit by the knife bug about seven months ago, and started buying them like a madman. I don't seem to carry it much anymore, since my Spydercos are my favorite tactical EDC's.

Here's my question: Is there really any practical advantage to an assisted opener versus a well designed one hand opener, like most Spydercos for instance? The only reason I ask is, my Endura and my Delica have replaced my Scallion for work, for potential self defense and everything else I can't think of, and I don't miss the assisted opening function one bit. The quickness and ease of deployment of a good non assisted one hand opener seems perfectly adequate to me in every way.

I'm not making an arguement for one over the other. This is obviously a simple matter of preference. I'd just like to hear others opinions.

P.S. I've never used a Sharpmaker. I've heard it pretty much sets the standard though.

I have a friend I used to work with in the armed security field. He could open his Spyderco with amazing speed. IMHO, I think if you have a knife which has a feature, like a thumb hole, or some other way of grasping it, with practice I think you could do just as well without the assisted opening feature. Just be willing to do some practice. I am seriously considering a different knife, with better quality. The ones I am thinking of right now are not Assisted Openers.

After making my post it occurred to me that in an acutely stressful or life and death situation the assisted opener or auto would have practical benefit in that even small differences in ease and speed of deployment might make a significant or even fatal difference. I definitely concede that point.

I was mainly thinking of more mundane applications like being on a ladder with a wet paintbrush in one hand and having to get your knife out to scrape some crud off the wall or something like that. In that case, I'm perfectly at home with a good one handed opener.

I agree. If the knife is mainly for every day chores, which most knives get used for, you are right. Not really much reason to have the assisted opening feature unless you really just like that feature. So far, thank God, I have not had to use an assisted opener as a last ditch defensive choice. I do not recommend for anyone to carry a knife with the idea of defensive use being a prime reason for carrying it. For one thing, that could be seen as "intent" if someone were to attack you. I just go used to having knives which could be opened quickly is all.
That reminds me too, on this site do we discuss fixed blades knives too or strictly pocket knives only?

I'll bet we can even talk about or post pictures of nice Hunters or Skinners...heck, maybe even Kitchen knives.....

If I even THINK I might have to pull a knife on somebody, I carry one that's made entirely of chocolate. That way, if they take it away from me and make me eat it, at least it's something I like...

Love it. I too am a big fan of chocolate. Now, where you find a good online source for custom designed milk chocolate that looks like a Benchmade Skirmish.

As we there taught back in the olden days in the military service.

Using a knife in defense of you life, is only to your advantage, if you know how to use it better than the person you are having your discussion with.
Other wise you will usually come out on the losing end of the knife.
