Do YOU know AERIAL?

So I have this knife and my simple question is aimed at the veteran Knife Fellas (or the very experienced youngins)... What do you think about this one? All of the examples I've held had gassed out on one scale or the other or both... Can you tell me anything about this old knife and this old company? Also the secondary tang stamp... Thanks

A nice old Aerial picture handle knife.According to the story there was a bunch of them(about 12,000 IIRC)found in a warehouse in the early 1970's and put on the market. They were apparently from the early 1930's.
The secondary blade marking(A.C.M.)stands for Aerial Cutlery Manufacturing Co.
What is really strange about these knives is that some of them deteriorated badly and others look like brand new.Celluloid is some strange stuff.As a word of caution, be very careful if you oil the joint as the oil will damage the picture under the handle if it gets on it. Don't ask how I know

Very informative knife7nut Thank you. Wow they found 12,000 of these in a warehouse in the 70's? So The value must be low eh? I have not seen any that were clean both front and back, it seems like they always have a bad side. Sorry to hear about your learning the hard way about being very careful with the oil but I DO APPRECIATE YOU giving me the heads up. Come to think of it perhaps that is what had happened to some of the Aerial picture knives I've seen in the past...

I've seen a couple that were faded on one side due to the tendency to display them in a case--so one side gets most of the light exposure.

Too long a soak in hot soapy water can damage the pictures as well. . . .

Mr. Highpower, I have yet to see a better "unit" errr ummm example of an Aerial picture knife. I know that there are some out there somewhere that don't even have a light scratch on the handle but good luck getting them to let you take pictures of it. My initial thoughts when I first got this knife was hmmm I dunno, Those handles and the pic underneath just look a bit TOO good. So I went to feelin on her and opening blades etc. and I was impressed with the fit and finish and the over all quality of this type of knife. Usually you think novelty type knife made cheap, and most other "Novelty" knives are made cheaply so fit and finish isn't even a consideration with the exception of Golden Rule, CASE and a couple others. When I didn't feel or see anything that made it obvious she had been apart or was a blatant counterfeit my skepticism grew even more for just a couple of minutes. I looked over her some more and then that feeling came over me, You know that kinda strange feeling when you JUST KNOW that it is real even though it is just a hunch. I am even skeptical about skepticism so being that type of person I felt the need to consult the guys here on AAPK Who may have fondled a few of these in their lifetimes. Based on the amount of responses this topic has received and the very few OPINIONS received (there's usually lots of opinions around here ) I gather that there are not very many of the 12,000 found in the 70's floating around and of the ones that are few very few are in such wonderful condition as this unit (laffin sorry) err umm specimen ? Based on the same I conclude that here on AAPK and most likely the world at large ACTUALLY very few KNOW AERIAL..... Thanks Chet, When it was first flashed in front of me I thought hmmm..... There's something rotten in Denmark. But when I held it and felt it that smell started becoming pleasant... like, well.... kind of like roses Tater is still Waiting

My only Aerial.....1 of 600 1970's Repro's. This one has nice stag and operates perfectly.
