identify knife stamped u.s.a. only

Picked up this knife for cheap and the only markings are usa on tge tang. Can anyone tell me who might have made it.

Shell knife. I'm going to guess Imperial or Colonial.

Thanks Jerry. Was it common not to stamp the tang on those for some reason?

They did stamp the tang. But only with USA. I think those were often associated with advertising or Novelty type knives where quality wasn't the important factor. Or the inexpensive pocketknife behind the guy at the corner store which is affordably priced. I think the same companies made a slightly better version of ad/nov type knife that they would tang stamp their name on.If quality isn't of importance then even the makers don't want to be associated with or be tied to by brand name as the maker of " The Cheapest Knife You Can Make Me" advertising knives. They only stamped USA on there because they had to. But odds are I'm wrong as usual.

Occasionally you will see one stamped with just "USA" or maybe "Made In USA" (Camillus did the "Made In USA" for Sears on some knives from the mid '20s to the mid '60s). I can't really answer your question as to how common it was. That's beyond my scope of knowledge.

Here's a couple more for perspective...the second one with the 'risque' lady on it looks like it has some age to it.

The pocketknife you have some call a "peanut". Below in these photos is a "USA" marked customized under contract for the "Jimmy Carter" Presidential Election. Both Colonial and Imperial made custom ad knives for all types of companies and were made affordably. Hard to say who was handling who's extra workload. These "scorpion" stiletto knives are: (left to right) Colonial {white,yellow} , Imperial {red,black}. In reality it was Billy Carter that ate more "peanuts" drinking beer named after himself.... burp.
