Formby's Lemon Oil Treatment

Has anyone ever used Formby's on their knife handles??

I am scavenging this information from another forum but reading the comments of Tony Bose and others who use Formby's lemon Oil treatment speak highly of it..

It seems that it restores stag and bone and helps to prevent cracks and enhances the look of the bone and stag. It was also mentioned that pocket knife repairmen in the old factorys would soak a knife in lemon oil over night before they would take it apart because it made the bone more plyable and it didn,t crack as easy while they worked on it.

Anyways after reading this I went ahead and purchased some and found it does enhance the stag & bone and really shines up the material. Oh yeah it smells pretty good too...Walmart carries it in the paint dept..

If I lemon oil all my knives and they start to decompose, I'm going to be after you sunburst!

No. Seriously. I'll have to give it a try. I've never heard of using it. Thanks for sharing the info.

Hey Sunburst, is it ok for the blades and bolsters as well? I know some are very particular what kind of oil they get on the blades.

That was my question as well on the lemon oil. I wondered if it would hurt the finish on the bolsters or blades but from what I have heard and experienced it will not hurt or tarnish the metal. I just wipe off any excess that happens to get on the bolsters or springs.

The way I looked at it if the premiere custom knife maker in America Tony Bose is recommending this product as a useful tool I want to check it out..It does bring out a nice luster to your bone and stag handles and since it is very penetrating it protects the material from drying out..

When it get old will it smell like vegetables rotten smell?

This is why we don't use veggy oil right?

I've used Lemon Oil, Orange Oil, Howard's Feed 'N Wax, neutral Shoe Polish, Mineral Oil, and Baby Oil. They all seem to be pretty effective...well, except when I used the Baby Oil, my knives woke up crying every few hours.

very funny el lobo. these wood products are not food so they won't spoil, lemon escence or artificial odorants.
