I could be a Schrade but check the stamp

Post by Shearer »

I just look at this one on Ebay. See the small E behind the large E in Schrade.

The condition of the bone is consistent with the condition of the blades.

I agree with Kaleb, looks like a fine specimen.

Just MHO
Hand etched or Individual stamped lettering. Definately not a Schrade factory stamp. Inconsistant hesitant straight lines in lettering, inconsistant depth and spacing of "stamps". Kind of unusual that the master has a mirror finish on one side, glaze finish on other, while the smaller pen blade has mirror finish on both.
Unusual to have iron/steel bolsters in aged vintage condition while the blades are unused, unsharpened, high-mirror finished. Lot of work cleaning up vintage blades and leave the bolsters original?
The handle grips and pinning are consistant with the bolsters, not the blades.
Again, just my honest opinion.

The knife looks right to me in every way.

The bolsters look like nickle silver, not steel, are they?

Here is a picture of the entire knife for posterity.

I'm trying to learn something here so please bear with me; those of you who say the knife is OK, please tell me what might explain that small letter "E" visable under the larger "E" in the Schrade stamp ?

Philco I asked about the stamp more so than the knife and it seems to me that it alright by some to muck with the stamp as long as the knife looks right. After the first couple of answer I got I gave up posting in Counterfeit watch.

Shearer, I have a knife exactly like yours. My stamp is a little sharper, but
the style is the same. I think your tang stamp is factory. I have seen older
knives that the stamps are some what ruff. Maybe from very used stamps.

stockman your stamp is fine it looks original the stamp on the other knife has been tampered with. They have cleaned the knife and used something on the letters to make them look sharper. This it what the seller said :
Condition: Used :
Seller Notes: “This knife has never been used or sharpened. The master blade has a mirror finish on one side and a glaze finish on the other. The smaller blade has an unblemished glaze finish on both sides. Handles and bolsters excellent.

The blade had the earlier Schrade Cut. Co. stamp which used a smaller letter "E", this blade was obviously re-stamped with the newer Schrade Walden era stamp.

Look at the entire knife first, then see what is stamped on the tang LAST, this knife has never been apart and the blade was factory re-stamped, seen it hundreds of times. Tang stamp dies wear out and the stamp is no longer clear this is the case with this knife.

I have the posted knife figured out....

Someone took an original older congress knife, possibly a Remington, possibly a Case Brothers. After removing the handles and blades, they removed the original nickel silver bolsters from the liners and replaced them with artificially aged steel "rattail" bolsters. Then they added replacement bone handles jigged and dyed to duplicate the early Schrade "peachseed" bone. A clever ploy. Note that in looking carefully at the handle pins, they have been spun in the counterclockwise rather than the clockwise direction. This indicates a three phase motor operating below the equator, so the counterfeiting was done in a South American country.

The counterfeiting was done in South America as that is the source of the bone for the handles. It is clear that the bone was jigged and dyed after it was installed on the knife. In fact, the bone was installed on the knife while the cow (steer) was alive and grazing in the fields. That way the bone naturally grafted over the pin holes, leaving no trace that the handles are not original to the knife. This is a special process that takes several years from start to finish, but results in some very convincing fake rehandle jobs.

Then on each blade they carefully filled in the original tang stamp lettering using weld metal from a carbon steel welding rod, heated to over 2100 degrees C. The blade tangs were each then carefully ground down and polished out, ready to accept the new tang stamp lettering. Each tang was then (somewhat crudely) hand engraved to display the new "Schrade" tang stamp. That is why there is no visible evidence of the blade tangs having been "shaved" as is normally done on a counterfeit knife.

The original mirror finish in each blade was removed and replaced with a combination of new mirror polish and hand rubbed glazed finish.

At least the backspring is probably original, but I would have to see a view of it to be certain.

Miller Bro's if yours was the first answer I would have not have asked any more questions.I knew it was a Schrade all I said ;See the small E behind the large E in Schrade. When you get the answer there nothing wrong with the knife when you asked about the stamp.I though I was wasting my time asking.I posted this post on the 27/1/2013 and got a answer today.Thank you

Pretty tough to make a judgement based on the photos provided.

You might have to have the knife in hand to decide, I, for one, don't really see a small "e" but, rather a possible artifact of the lighting used for the photo.

The knife itself looks fine.

I can see now that advice given on this site must be taken with a grain of salt. To me, that knife looked right in every way. I also think the small "E" was a reflection.

Knifeaholic's analysis was really pretty funny, and indicates that he thought the knife was correct, too.

In the old Schrade catalogs, many knives said "crocus polished on one side", very common. But when you actually see this on a knife, it makes you suspicious? Maybe you've just never seen a mint one.
