Re: knife repairman advertizing on ebay
I ran into the ad night before last and was curious too. I found it via knife searches. I'll have to admit, with the high amount of defective knives via bad descriptions from uninformed sellers or straight up crooks etc. (which I'm glad he's pointing out) I would say there is quite a market right there on ebay for repair work for both those who got burned, bought parts/junk knives or wants to sell a knife that would bring a lot more money if it were retipped or the ding was taken out of the blade/bolster etc.~~~~ Why didn't some of YOU guys think of that? lol I think that he might be opening a can of worms, and how does ebay protect either party when it comes to "services"? I doubt they will send their lawyers in for the rescue. I would be a bit skeptical of anyone typing out an advertisement for their services and didn't at least proofread the first few lines like he does " Sharping" and he ends the Ad "John The ______" Blank, hmmm good ole John the blank. I think I'll send him my XYZ for .99 on ebay. I'm not ragging on him (though he should proof read something like that) and I think there is a definite need for his services in that environment but the risk for both parties is apparent. And here come the COPYCATS with their nose in the tail of those with ideas and inspiration, but for all I know he got the idea from someone else that's doing it. LOL oh yeah, (zip)
I don't know the guy knife-nut but I'm curious myself. He doesn't live very far from me and he makes sure to mention it's the last time he's going to move
it Kinda makes me wonder where he's from and why he may have moved so much... I forgot to remember if he mentions his last name in his ad but I DO know he basically signed it ~
John The (?) John who and THE What? ebay is risky, buyer beware...

He also list his phone number, for you to call** in his ad _____why would you want to spend"" 99 cents"",when you already have the shop number ???( I did find out this is a Sprint Spectrum ,cell phone number (405-209 7456), in Payne County,OK. ( would have to pay to get name & address) ___ I think this guy was very smart,to run a ""world-wide add"" for free,if there is a "'no-sale""___ will e-bay pull it ?? that's to be seen ???____he has been on e-bay since 2002 and has 504 positive +++transactions__he has tried to tell you everything about himself (except last name
)__he's from Bethany,OK.__ maybe*** reddirtknives, lives close enough to check him out (and will give us all a ""report"" ???
)____
I didn't know Orvet (Dale) or Muskrat Man (Kaleb) either ???, when I sent them knives or money the "'first time ??___If, I was going to use ""John"" for repair,
I would simply give him a call__get his full name & address ( google earth will give you a front yard look at his house ,without leaving your computer) and for a few $$$ you can do a ""Reverse Phone Number"" check on the guy and find out who he is,as well as his neighbors ___seems to me he is just an enterprising type guy, trying to make a living in these hard times ??__so many just want a hand-out from the goverment***___but,that's just my opinion, and you know about them opinions
____good luck
Monk

There is no doubt that there is a market for this.
If I were younger & in better health I might consider something like this, but I am too old & tired.
If I started taking in every repair that people wanter me to take I would be booked for months ahead.
There is definitely a market for it, though I do think the economy is slowing down most of the service industries.

Re: knife repairman advertizing on ebay
Monk I would love to know this guy for sure as the knife mechanic I know is also getting on in years and is not Quite as precise as say 10 years ago and he is following his bliss and doing what he wants to do when and if he wants to do it (which I am all for) also I think it is better if you live close enough to them to be able to drop it off in person, pick it up etc. But most of all I would like to buy some of his knives lol even if he might have polished them or did a repair, at least you know who did it and if honest he'll tell you what when and why... I was not making fun of him and I find the gutsy idea admirable but, If he is going to be making his own knives and custom knives for other people from buying the billets to forging and tempering oops oh yeah he sends that out etc etc He's not going to have much time for repairs on the worldwide scale, Since he's only giving it 9 hours of his time a day I assume 7 days a week but reality screams whenever he feels like it
I wonder if the saw hanging on the shop wall is the one he's going to use to remove the trees so he can set up his press
... I honestly would like to meet him but not unless I had a reason and since he is never ever never going to move again I am happy just knowing that he will always be there and if I do meet him I will report back with pictures, reviews and maybe even some stories... Bethany is about 8 square miles in size and there happens to be at least 3 ebay members who sell knives that live there that I know of so his choice of location couldn't be better for Oklahoma not to mention that particular 8 square miles... I think I will start calling it little Solingen
...... Bethany is about 60 miles from Payne
