Case/Bose or not?

Post by dkronholm »

Item #'s 150125581661 and 280118618729QQ

Both Sowbellies, Case on shield, no T Bose on second blade, and Troy McHenry's site doesn't list a sowbelly as ever being made.

I don't pretend to know all there is to know, but this is my understanding.

Tony Bose kind of "resurrected" the sowbelly pattern a few years ago with Case. That is the reason for the TB in the pattern numbers. They look to me to be regular production sowbellies (and good examples of them). The stag handled one is a bit tough to see, but there may be a hint of a blade etch with a stag head on it. If so, this would be a SFO for Shepherd Hills Cutlery and there were, I believe, 500 made. There were an additional 250 made with the Stag blade etch and scrolled bolsters. Original retail was $129.99 according to the SHC website.
A life without pocketknives is dull and pointless.

Here is a link of the Case/Bose collaborations

http://www.mchenryknives.com/collection/index.html

my understanding is that all the Case/Bose designed knives will have ATS 34 steel. There was a sowbelly made in 2001 & saddlehorn in 2004(picture included) but it is not of the same line as the other Bose knives. I believe that it was made with stainelss steel and under a different set of guidelines not employed by the Case/Bose collaborations with ATS 34..

I will try to research this more though...I am not as sure of myself when it comes to the sowbelly.. ::dang::

Tony Bose

The collaboration knives are much higher quality and limited numbers. They are deep cryo heat treated ATS34 and all stainless frames and bolsters with pined on shields after the 2nd year. Most of them have a bushing in the pivot and they are made to be work horses. I know several people that carry and use them. They will preform. All of these are made in the proto shop by 3 men. I have went there and helped them get started on the lockback whittler. All the parts are EDM wire cut from prototypes that I make so what they end up with is very close to what I send them. Try one, you'll like it.
Just for information's sake I added this quote by Tony Bose from another forum about the collaboration knives. I hope dkronholm does not mind me adding this.. :?

Absolutely not Sunburst. I was just wanting to put out the word on these knives. Based on the other thread, where Tony Bose himself educated us, the sowbelly was apparently a design inspired (if that is the best word) by him, but these TB numbered knives are Case prod. knives. They definitely aren't the same as Case/Bose collaborations. Tony even put a fair value on them of $50-$60.

The collaboration knives according to Tony are made by 3 men in the Case proto shop based on prototypes Tony supplies them. He speaks highly of how well they match up with his tolerances as well, and I get the impression he wouldn't hesitate to speak his mind if that weren't true. Also, based on what he said, the price doesn't seem out of line when you think of what his knives go for.

I just started to look into the Collaboration knives, and didn't know what was going on with the ebay knives. I wouldn't doubt that a buyer may end up thnking he had a collaboration knife when in reality it is a dfferent beast entirely. So, I wouldn't call these counterfeit or even a fraudulent description, but still it seems on the slick side to call them Case Boses with no further explanation.
