Post by hank_krebs »

Hello Gang of Friends!!- I always get the one item out of the bin with no bar code from the futherest corner of the store. So this one is not something surprising. Yellow handles ( with greenish corrosion beneath) Case with xx below and #3254. List doesn't show any 3254s earlier than 65.So what could it be???Value?? Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts Hank

I'm not quite sure what list you refer to but yours dates 1940 thru 1964 and is know as a XX in common parlance.
I am not real sure when Case began using the yellow handles but I have a stockman with yellow handles that dates 1920 to 1940, which is called the Tested era.
I am reasonably sure that the trappers first showed up in the Case inventory in the Tested era,1920 to 1940. That being the situation, I suspect that the trapper with yellow handles also dates to that time.
::welcome:: to AAPK by the way.

Hank,
At some point you are going to need to buy some reference books.
Maybe start with Jim Sargent's book "American Premium Guide to Knives and Razors", 7th ed. It is comprehensive on old Case knives. Keep in mind that book values refer to mint knives, which yours aren't, at least the ones I have seen. Another good book is Steve Pfieffer's book "Collecting Case Knives". There are lots of other books out there. "Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values" book, 4th ed, is excellent but it is pricey. Later editions were not compiled by Levine and do not have his blessing.
There are quite a few good threads here on books and you might want to do a search here in that regard.
