It is pretty neat!
Thanks for sharing Eric! ::tu::

Any more cool tools we can make for knife repair?
How about a picture Dale?
Here is my version of Eric's tool for putting in the pivot pin last, or replacing the blades without taking the knife apart.

I haven't had occasion to use it yet, but I have it next time I need it. ::tu::

Looks good Dale. What material did you use for that? Looks like some thin steel???

The steel is 1/16" 1095 I had laying around the shop.
The brass in the center is 1/16" brass sheeting.

I actually printed out Eric's picture, resized to the proper size, and used that as a paper pattern to outline of the outside pieces.

Eric

Thanks Eric.
I was wondering what is the thickness of brass spacer on the tool you posted?

Thanks again! ::tu::

Dale, I'll have to check Monday, got it in the shop. It's just a piece of cut-center scale but offhand I can't recall the thickness on those. As long as you can fit a center scale between those two outside pieces you're good to go.

Thanks Eric, I appreciate you checking.
I don't want it too thin to fit around the liner.

Dale what is the overall length of the tool you made? Thanks - I'm working on one. Maybe I should ask Eric if you haven't used yours yet.

Made one of these today and it was easy enough. I'll add some comments that might help others. The pc of brass in the middle is only a divider. I checked some old liners and they were .020 thick and used one of them. This seems to work fine. Another thing is when you go to pin this together insert a razor blade at top just as you would use a feeler gauge when pinning a knife. This will keep the 2 halves from joining together and will leave a gap to straddle the liner of the knife you'll be working on. When you have pinned it together remove the blade and the gap will be there. The tool I made is a littlle over 3" long and that seems to be fine for the stockman pattern. I wonder if you worked down to a peanut size pattern if it would still work or you'd need a smaller version? Maybe an old single backspring just retooled a bit would work on a knife with a single blade on one end? You'll also find these don't work well on a knife like the Case 6318 where there are 2 blades at the top and 1 blade at the bottom. If you try to use this on the bottom you'll notice the tool hits the curvature of the master blade backspring before it hits the other side. This just doesn't work out. This does work great on the top end where there are 2 blades. I used some 3/32, O1 I got from Jantz. I had to taper the end a bit to go inside the cavity on the knife and may have to adjust that more on other knives?

I made another one yesterday and put a bit more time in finishing it on a Scotch Brite wheel to take off the rough edges.
I used 1/16" brass sheeting for the center spacer. I figured it would work of larger knives with thicker liners as well.
